Archiving Images for Sharing
Our Digital Photo Guide has a great article on Archiving Images for Sharing. This article, written by our friends at ACD Systems, details some popular ways to archive all of the digital photos that you've collected before sharing them with friends and family (through FTP, naturally).
Check out the article here.

RFC 959
RFC 959, written way back in 1985, provides some fantastic background history on FTP. (RFC stands for Request For Comments. They are "official" notes about Internet technologies and standards).
You can read the full document here, which covers terminology, history, objectives and more.

Displaying Contact Details on a Web Site
There's an interesting thread in our discussion forum about displaying contact details on your Web site. As many people know, displaying an e-mail adress can lead to being placed on spammer e-mail lists. Throughout the thread, alternatives are discussed (using a graphic or script, for example).
Click here to view the thread and leave a reply with how you display your contact details.

Have you ever created a Skin for a product? Have you ever changed the Skin of a product? Leave a comment and let us know.

What is a WS_FTP Service Agreement?
Two questions we get asked often are What is a WS_FTP Service Agreement? and Do I need one of these Service Agreements to keep using WS_FTP?.
Let's answer these...
What is a WS_FTP Service Agreement?
Basically, you receive two things with an agreement: free upgrades while your Service Agreement is active and technical support from Ipswitch (the company that develops WS_FTP).
As an example, somebody with a WS_FTP Service Agreement would receive a free upgrade to WS_FTP 2006 when it is released and could then talk to (or e-mail) someone in technical support for information on one of the new features.
Do I need one of these Service Agreements to keep using WS_FTP?
Absolutely not. When you purchase the WS_FTP software, you can continue to use it under the license agreement without any additional purchases.
If you have additional questions on the WS_FTP Service Agreements, check out Ipswitch's Web site.
Have a question about WS_FTP, FTP in general or anything related? Post the question in our discussion forums or drop us a line. We can't respond to everyone individually, but we read everything we receive. Just like this entry, we'll respond with a blog entry to frequently asked questions.

WS_FTP Tutorial: Using the Thumbnail View
In WS_FTP, you can view graphics as thumbnails. This makes it very easy to find the JPGs, GIFs and other graphic files that you want to FTP.
Check out the Using WS_FTP Pro Thumbnail View Tutorial for more information (thumbnail view is also available in WS_FTP Home).

Turn Your PC Into an FTP Server
Have you ever wanted to run an FTP server from your home computer? It's easier than you might think.
The FTPplanet.com article, Turn Your PC Into an FTP Server gives you the information you need to get started. Here is an excerpt:
"To run your own FTP server all you need is a computer with an Internet connection (any Internet connection will do) and FTP server software.
Now there are number of options when choosing FTP server software. Like all Internet software, FTP server software is available at all price ranges. The server that is best for you depends on how often you intend on running your FTP server, how many people you expect to access your FTP server and the amount of money you’re willing to spend."

Selecting Multiple Files
In WS_FTP 9 (both Home and Professional versions), you can easily select all files in a directory by right-clicking in that directory's tab and choosing Select All from the menu.
You can also select a range of files by clicking a file name and holding down shift before selecting a second file. All files listed between the two selected will be highlighted.
To select multiple files that aren't in a range, or to deselect a file within a range, hold down CTRL and click the file.
A fourth method of selecting multiple files is to click and drag your mouse over the file names.
How do you select multiple files?

Do you have a lot of digital photos?
If so, take a look at ACDSee with WS_FTP PhotoMover.
Here's a screenshot:

Click here for a larger, detailed version of the screenshot.
I've been using the ACDSee with WS_FTP PhotoMover software since it was released and have found it to be a very easy, simple and efficient way to transfer my pictures.
I use the thumbnail view to easily find the pictures I need to transfer and to verify they transferred correctly.
I've even convinced my dad to use the software for uploading his eBay auction pictures (he was using the old WS_FTP LE before).

Using WS_FTP's HotDrop Feature
WS_FTP version 9 (both Home and Professional versions) has a feature called HotDrop. HotDrop is one of the easiest ways to transfer files using FTP -- you don't even need to launch the client to use it.
Simply create a HotDrop folder in WS_FTP (it just takes a few clicks). Once created, you can drag and drop files into it. WS_FTP will connect, authenticate and transfer your files behind the scenes.
The FTPplanet tutorial Using HotDrop To Upload Files will guide you through the process of creating a HotDrop.
It's so easy, I can do it!

Review of WS_FTP Professional 9
The UK magazine BIOS has a review of WS_FTP Professional on their Web site. You can view it here.
I always enjoy reading third-party reviews of the WS_FTP line and thought others in the FTPplanet community might as well. I'll post reviews as I come across them. If you see one, feel free to post a link to it as a comment or in our discussion forums.

More on Sorting Files
A follow-up to yesterday's post...
If you sort by date modified, it is easy to see which files have been last edited or added in a directory. This is an easy way to find and upload only those recently modified files that you need to upload.
