WS_FTP Wins Award!
![]() |
WS_FTP Professional 2006 has received the BIOS Magazine Editor's Choice Award. Here is an excerpt: |
"WS_FTP Professional 2006 is probably the most secure way to transfer files. This mature FTP client lets you easily and securely transfer files between your home and office, and to and from customers, clients, or vendors. Its features include security (SSL, SSH, and PGP) and advanced file management - everything you would expect from an FTP client - and increased security and transfer options now provide up to 256-bit encryption and support for HTTP and HTTPS transfers. Along with OpenPGP public key/private key encryption, extensive protocol support, e-mail notifications and a new compression utility, WS_FTP Professional 2006 defines standards-based secure data management."

Using Workspaces Interactive Tutorial
Workspaces is a new feature in WS_FTP Professional 2006 that allows you to save a specific configuration of local and remote sites. It's a great feature that I've been using a lot (I have an FTPplanet workspace, a digital photo workspace and a few others).
An interactive tutorial is now available for the workspaces feature. You can view it here.
Do you like this style of tutorial? Let us know by leaving a comment.

Just Starting Out With a Web Site?
If you're just getting started with your first Web site, you really only need three things:
1. Create your Web pages. There are a number of ways to do this. Read our New Webmaster's Guide for more information.
2. Find a Web host. Many ISPs offer free hosting with your account and there are numerous other hosts that will sell or lease you Web space. See our Hosting reviews section for some recommendations.
3. Upload your pages to your Web host. We have a number of tutorials and articles to get you started.
If you're doing this for the first time, it may seem daunting. Once you get started, I can assure you it's not. Like riding a bicycle for the first time, getting started is a challenge -- but once you start, you don't forget.

FTP Security and Access
I came across a column on FTP Security and Access today.
The column discusses how important it is to keep your FTP account secure. FTPplanet.com couldn't agree more.
One nitpick with the article is that it mentions "It's important to remember that FTP is NOT SECURE. Those usernames and passwords are sent to and from the server in a non-secure manner." FTP can be secure. WS_FTP Home provides 128-bit SSL encryption ad WS_FTP Professional now provides 256-bit AES encryption.

Try WS_FTP Professional....Win an iPod Shuffle!
Ipswitch is running a contest through June 30. If you download and try the new WS_FTP Professional 2006, you will be entered into a contest for a chance to win 1 of 10 iPod Shuffle. That's it!

Good luck and have fun with WS_FTP. The new version has some fantastic features you won't find in any other FTP clients (such as 256-bit encryption and -- my favorite -- workspaces).

Import Sites Into WS_FTP 2006
One of the new features in WS_FTP Home 2006 and WS_FTP Professional 2006 is the ability to import your FTP sites from another FTP client.
FTPplanet.com has a tutorial to walk you through the steps. Click here to see it.
WS_FTP 2006 can import sites from the following FTP clients:
- CuteFTP versions 3.0 through 6.0
- FTP Voyager versions 9.0 through 11.0
- WS_FTP LE
Try it out. I recently imported my sites from WS_FTP LE into WS_FTP Home 2006.

WS_FTP Professional 2006's New Compression Mode
Here's another peek at the new WS_FTP Professional 2006. This screenshot shows how to activate the new Compression Mode in WS_FTP Professional. As the name implies, Compression Mode lets you compress a number of files on your local machine into a single file before transferring, which will save on transfer times. Very cool stuff.
Compression Mode will be found exclusively in WS_FTP Professional.
