Using the Desktop to Transfer Files
Did you know that you can utilize your desktop (or another Windows folder) along with WS_FTP to transfer files? It's very simple...just open a remote connection in WS_FTP and drag-and-drop files between your desktop and WS_FTP. Try it out!

Disk Quota Exceeded
If you see the error message 'Disk Quota Exceeded' when transferring a file, it means that you have run out of FTP space with your Web host.
Contact your ISP or Web host to see how you go about getting more space, or delete some older files that you no longer need.

Pings & Packets from eWeek
eWeek is featuring WS_FTP in their Pings & Packets section. Here's a quote I found funny:
If you say "FTP" to 95 percent of the people who use the Internet on a daily basis, they'll probably think you want to send some flowers or are talking about an old alternative rock band.
On a more serious note, they also say WS_FTP is among the few FTP clients that are worth paying for.

'Retry Transfer' Options
You can tell WS_FTP how to react to failed transfer by setting the retry options.
Open the Options screen (Tools > Options) and then choose 'Transfers' from the left-hand column. The first two options let you tell WS_FTP how many times to retry failed transfers and the delay between retries.
If you don't want WS_FTP to retry failed transfers, set the number of retries to zero.

Changing Filenames During a Transfer
In WS_FTP, you can easily change the name of a file during the transfer.
Highlight the file that you would like to transfer but instead of transferring it as you would normally, hold down the 'CTRL' key and then transfer the file. WS_FTP will prompt you for a destination filename. Simply enter the new name and click 'OK' to start the transfer.

index.html
When creating your Web site, the page that visitors first see when coming to your site is called your Homepage. This is the page that visitors go to by default when they type in the main address for your site.
This homepage can be any HTML page you want, but it must be named either index.html or default.html. For example, when you visit FTPplanet.com (http://www.FTPplanet.com), you are really going to the index.html page off the root directory or http://www.FTPplanet.com/index.html.
This is true of all subdirectories as well. For example.
http://www.FTPplanet.com/newsletter/ will actually go to the 'index.html' page in the 'newsletter' directory.
When you create your personal Web pages, remember to name the page you want as your Homepage 'index.html'.

WS_FTP Professional 2006 a ZDNet Editor's Choice
ZDNet UK selected WS_FTP Professional 2006 as an Editor's Choice -- an 8.9 rating (out of 10).
Their "verdict" is "No other FTP client can match the features and customisation options of Ipswitch’s WS_FTP, which makes data management tasks faster, easier and more secure. The latest version is a solid upgrade, focussing specifically on the needs of business users."

Overwriting Files
You can change how WS_FTP will act when transferring files of the same name. Click Tools and then choose Options to open the Program Options screen. Next, select Transfers in the left-hand column.
In the middle of the Transfer Options screen is a box labelled "File overwrite prompt" which offers three options:
1. Don't prompt for overwrite (always overwrite)
2. Prompt for overwrite if file exists
3. Prompt for overwrite for same or newer files only
Select the option of your choice and click OK.
I use the second option, as I'd rather play it safe. Which option do you prefer?

Organizing Your FTP Sites
In WS_FTP, you can create folders in the Site Manager to better organize your FTP Sites. I use this option to keep my work-related FTP sites separate from my personal sites.
To create a new folder, click Tools from the file menu and then select Site Manager.
When the Site Manager opens, select 'Create Folder' from the right-hand column.
Type a name for the folder and click OK. You will see that the folder has been created.
To move an existing site to the new folder, simply drag-and-drop the site name to the folder. To create a new site in the folder, highlight the folder name and click Create Site.

530 Login Incorrect
One of the most commonly seen error messages in FTP is "530 Login Incorrect" (sometimes the 530 is followed by different wording, such as "access denied" or "Invalid userid/password").
The 530 error is a general error messages from an FTP server and (quite obviously) notes that you cannot connect to the server. Some common solutions to the 530 error include:
- Mistyping your username or password (remember, these are usual case sensitive -- PASSWORD is not the same as password).
- Logging in with the wrong username or password.
- Including a space in your username or password (a common problem when copying and pasting the username or password).
