Downloaded trial version of WS_FTP Home edition and successfully updated my website on the first try. Ever since that first use, I cannot connect to my website. The error message reads: Connection Error
This could be caused by any of the following reasons:
Your network connection is down.
The host address is incorrect.
The server you are attempting to connect with is not available.
Click the Details button to view information from the connection log.

When I click "details" it says:
Finding Host mytowntennis.com ...
Address lookup of "mytowntennis.com" failed. It may be misspelled, or your computer may not be connected to the network or Internet.
Also check that your DNS and local name servers are properly configured and responding.

This is incorrect because I know that my username and hostname is correct - have published the site more than 5 yrs. Can anyone tell me what is likely to be wrong? Thanks so much.

S.Bertrand, are you trying to connect to 'mytowntennis.com' or 'ftp.mytowntennis.com'?

Usually (but not always, you might need to check with your web host), you need the 'ftp' at the beginning of the URL.

It could, as the details mention, be a DNS error. This is something your web host/domain administrator can help you with.

Iguehi, the 1020 error could be because you are downloading a text file in binary mode. If it's a text file (which includes HTML pages, JavaScript code and other items that are essentially plan text), try uploading it in ASCII mode.

Vipin, could you expand a little bit? I'm not sure exactly what your problem is.

Hi. I have an older Wm Smith FTP, and a newer, Version 6. Both work FAST and flawlessly with my dial-up modem. But when I try to use either of them with my DSL (Earthlink). They move very slowly, and at around 20% just die and "time out." Earthlink has been no help at all. Can this just be a matter of adjusting settings? I had this problem long before I installed Norton Firewall, so I don't think Firewall has anything to do with it. Thanks, Randy

Hi r hanes, you can try changing an internal parameter in the site profile. To do this, you would need to go in your ws_ftp.ini file and add the following line:

sendbuffersize=16384

in the section corresponding to your site.

Where the ws_ftp.ini file sits depends on your version and OS (try a search of your hard drive) and you can edit the file in notepad.

Thanks to Claudio at the FTP forums for this tip.
