Free ad-free version of Opera? Yup.
Download.com alerted me to Opera's 10th anniversary and the fact that today only you can receive a free ad-free version of the Opera browser.
I've been using Opera for about a year now and find it to be a great alternative to Internet Explorer (Firefox who?). Opera is FTPplanet recommended.
Get your free version at Download.com or from Opera's Web site.
Seriously, I can't recommend Opera enough. Even if you're too late to get in on the free deal, give their ad-supported version a try.

WS_FTP's Site Manager
The WS_FTP Site Manager is used to access and configure your FTP sites. You can access the Site Manager by clicking 'Connect' on the toolbar or clicking 'Tools' and then 'Site Manager'
When the Site Manager opens, you will see list of your FTP sites in the left window and command buttons to the right. These commands are:
Connect: Connect to the selected FTP site.
Create Site: Create a new FTP site. If you want to store this new site in a particular folder, select that folder first, then click Create Site.
Create Folder: Create a new folder in which to store FTP sites.
Edit: Edit the selected site or folder.
Rename: Rename the selected site or folder.
Delete: Delete the selected site or folder. Note: deleting a folder will also delete all sites within the folder.
Close: Close the Site Manager.
Help: Access the Site Manager help information.

Toolbars, toolbars, toolbars
It seems that every search engine has a toolbar. There's the Yahoo toolbar, Google toolbar, MSN, Ask Jeeves, eBay, etc. etc. etc.
I think these toolbars are useful but if you have too many of them, your screen gets cluttered. This morning, I uninstalled all of my toolbars except for my favorite -- the Yahoo one (came out a winner thanks to their spyware scanning button).
Which toolbar is your favorite? How many do you have installed?

Firewall problems
This one keeps coming up: problems FTPing due to a firewall. This thread ("Windows XP SP2") does a great job of providing solutions and discussing the issue.
If you're having firewall problems (or, as it's more commonly known, the "FTP just stopped working all of a sudden and I have no idea why" problem), try one -- or all -- of these:
- Allow WS_FTP access to the Internet
- Allow port 21 (the FTP default port) to be used
- Allow any other port you're trying to FTP through to be used
- Reset your firewall settings (typically, WS_FTP is recognized as a safe program)
- Toggle the passive transfer option
You can also, as a temporary solution, turn off the firewall. If you turn off the firewall and FTP works again, you know the problem is with the firewall.

550 Error
If you receive the 550 error when logging into your web site, it means you've run into some kind of permissions problem. The 550 error is usually followed by additional text to better describe the problem.
Common are simple "permission denied" or "access denied" messages (make sure your username and password are correct), but more specific error messages will also show depending on the server you are connected to. Some of these specific messages are "no such file or directory" and "unknown user."
If you receive the 550 error and you're not sure what to do, post to our discussion forums for some help.
You can also try searching FTPplanet (search box at the top of most pages). Your question may have already been answered.

FTP Server 101
One of our most popular articles, FTP Server 101: A Beginner's Guide goes over the basics of setting up an FTP server.
So you’d like to start sharing files across the Internet, allowing visitors to get these files at their own convenience. Where do you start?
Unless you have your FTP site outsourced to a virtual hosting company, you’ll need a computer with adequate storage space for your FTP site. This computer will become your FTP server and, similar to a Web server, will need a constant connection to the Internet (i.e. a T1, Cable, DSL or ISDN connection). This computer may or may not be the same computer that hosts your Website.
Click here for the rest of the article.

FTP Helps Break World Record
Mobile Pipeline is reporting that FTP was used to break the world record for "longest wireless data transmission."
The article notes that "...they achieved an FTP file transfer rate of 2.3 Mbps. The previous record was about 125 miles, although that was done using a Wi-Fi based system compared to Trango's fixed wireless system."

500 Error
The 500 error in an FTP client signifies a syntax error or an unrecognized command. As with the 550 error, this can vary. The two most common are:
500 Illegal PORT Command: Try turning passive mode on in the options screen.
500 'SYST' command not understood: The server you are connecting to may not support SSL. Turn SSL off.

Skins
The FTPplanet Skins Center has additional skins that you can download to change the look of WS_FTP. This is a pretty cool feature available in WS_FTP Home 2006 and WS_FTP Professional 2006 (not available in previous versions or the old WS_FTP LE program).

If you have photos at home that you'd like to convert to digital files, you have a lot of options. Check out our Converting a Picture to Internet Format article for some information on this topic. (Admittedly, this article is a little out of date, but the basic concepts hold true.)

And once you have your photos converted, why not sort, edit and upload them with PhotoMover?

In WS_FTP (and many other software programs), you can press your F1 key at any time to open the help window.

Open Folder View
In WS_FTP, you can open a folder view which is similar to the familiar Windows Explorer look and feel.
Within the remote and local views (right and left panes), click 'Folders' in the toolbar. A new window will open with the folder view.
You can, of course, drag and drop from this view to transfer files.

Address Lookup Failed
The "Address Lookup Failed" error message is fairly common. This is usually due to firewall or anti-virus software blocking your FTP connection. Make sure that these types of programs allow FTP connections (how to do this varies by firewall and anti-virus software, but it is usually easy to do).
For more information, see this Ipswitch KnowledgeBase article.

Web Page Building for Beginners
In a search today, I came across an article from the online version of the Planview Daily Herald, a newspaper out of Texas.
The article covers some web site building basics and is a great read.
Here is an excerpt: "So, how do we get those pages to the server? Well, they must be uploaded to the server. What is “uploading,” you ask? The best memory trick for this term is to always picture the server as being “above you.” If you need to transfer a file from a client to a server, you upload it. If you need to transfer a file from a server to client, you download it. Got it?"
Click here for the full article.

WS_FTP's Information Window
You can turn WS_FTP's Information Window (the window at the bottom of WS_FTP) on or off. Click 'View' and then 'Information Window' to toggle the setting.
If you have long directories, it may be helpful to turn the Information Window off since it frees up some real estate on your screen.

Have you ever transferred a file and you don't see that it transferred? You may need to refresh the listing.
Right-click in the remote or local window and choose 'Refresh' from the pop-up menu. The file listing will be refreshed and you should see the transferred file appear.
Depending on how you have the toolbars set-up, you may see a refresh icon on the toolbar. The refesh option is also available from the 'View' menu.
