Understanding the FTP Protocol
WindowsNetworking has a great article up about FTP. It does a good job explaining how FTP works behind the scenes. Here's their abstract:
Out of the many protocols in existence today only a couple have been written for the purpose of data transfer. After all, not all of the Internet’s activity revolves around HTTP and web pages. This article will cover the FTP protocol and how it goes about actually doing your data transfers for you.
I particularly enjoyed the "Behold the FTP packet!" section of the article, which explains (with an example) the information contained in an FTP packet.
Click here to read the article.

Using Norton and having FTP problems?
If so, check out this thread in our discussion forums.
A few people have posted solutions to the problem, which seems to have to do with Norton's "Internet Worm Protection" option.

Workspaces
One of my favorite new features in WS_FTP Professional 2006 (but not in the Home version) is the workspaces tool. Basically, workspaces are a way to save a configuration within WS_FTP so you don't have to set everything up the way you like each time you use WS_FTP.
Of course, if you just use one configuration and one FTP site, workspaces won't do much as you can just leave WS_FTP how you like and it will start up the same each time. But, if like me, you have multiple FTP sites (or if you have multiple configurations you like for the same site), workspaces are a great time-saver as you can easily change configurations from a simple drop-down menu. Take a look:
Check out FTPplanet's Workspaces tutorial for some more information.

Deleting address bar info in WS_FTP
WS_FTP 2006's address bar keeps FTP sites in a drop-down menu for easy access, but not everyone likes to have this information stored here. You can delete the information through Windows Explorer.
Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Ipswitch\WS_FTP\Sites and delete the file urlhistory.ini. This will delete the information stored in the drop down.
If you don't see the file in that directory, do a search of your computer for urlhistory.ini.

Browser Alternatives
Practically every Windows-based computer has a copy of Internet Explorer installed and IE is still the most popular browser, but there are plenty of great alternatives.
Opera and FireFox are two very popular alternatives (I personally enjoy using Opera). There are, of course, many others -- Netscape is still around, there's Avant, Slim Browser and others.
Which browser do you use most often?

Advanced FTP
Ipswitch (the company that develops WS_FTP) has a new WS_FTP offering available called the WS_FTP Data Management Suite.
Like the name implies, this is a suite of products which includes WS_FTP Professional, WS_FTP Server and the WS_FTP Professional SDK (which stands for Software Development Kit). This is a higher-end offering designed for those who want to develop and use custom WS_FTP applications. If you're into coding or development, check it out.
If you'd like to read a bit more, you can check out the press release on Yahoo.

Podcasts and FTP
The most efficient way to post your podcast to the Web is using FTP. The podcast files can get quite large and FTP is designed to safely upload and download files.
WS_FTP Professional, in particular, offers a number of features that are beneficial to podcasts:
Synchronize Utility: Synchronize your local and remote podcast folders so that you only upload new or changed audio files.
Scheduler: Specify a time for WS_FTP Professional to transfer your podcasts.
Hot Drop: Create a Hot Drop folder on your local computer, which allows you to drag and drop files into the folder without launching the full WS_FTP Professional every time you want to transfer.
Remote View: Easily see the podcasts and other files on the remote computer (your Web space).

Learn About Podcasting
Podcasting keeps getting more and more popular. If you keep hearing the term and want to see what it's all about, check out our 'The Wonderful World of Podcasting' article.
Think of podcasting as Internet broadcasting. In fact, the word podcast is a combination of the words "iPod" and "broadcast." Podcasts are created and posted to the Web in the popular MP3 format. At its simplest, you can download the MP3 file to your computer and listen to it as you would any other MP3. Read more.
Also, be sure to check out Pod101 for more information and to download the WGBH Morning Stories podcast.

"The files I transferred are corrupt!"
It's likely that you've transferred a binary file in ASCII transfer mode.
Make sure you transfer text files in ASCII mode and most other files (such as graphics, photos, music, zip files, etc.) in BINARY mode.
