What version of WS_FTP are you using?

Out of curiousity, what version of WS_FTP does everybody use? Home? Professional? LE? What version number are you using?

Use LE edition, version 4.60.98.03.17

Posted by: Andy Walker at September 29, 2005 05:42 PM

I am using WS-FTP Pp 2006.
BTW, I do not know what "URL" means. Please explain. I don't know if it means the URL of my Web Site, or what. Guess I'm getting too old to be able to understand.

Posted by: Ted at September 29, 2005 05:43 PM

Ted, the URL is the address of your web site, if you have one. For example, the URL of this web site is http://www.ftpplanet.com.

I've been using WS_FTP LE for several years now, and it's served me faithfully. I don't do enough FTP'ing to warrant purchasing an FTP program, and I do too much to use the command line utility provided in Windows. WS_FTP LE works great for me for what I do.

I am using WS_FTP LE version 05.08 2000.02.23 because I can't afford to buy more elaborate products. Anyway, it is about the only FTP I can handle and (more or less) understand !

Posted by: Druez at September 29, 2005 06:26 PM

I am using LE edition, version 4.60.98.03.17 - At one time I purchased a newer version, but lost the SW and the key.

I like the LE as it can be simply copied from one computer to the other with all settings simply as a directory, and not as an installation. This has saved my butt many times!! It also makes it a gem to back up.

I am using WS_FTP LE v6.0. I am a light user and this application does exactly what I want it to!

I use WS-FTP95 LE

Posted by: mary lou at September 29, 2005 06:56 PM

I'm a hobby user with a minimal web site.

I'm using LE 6.0. It lets me do simple uploads to my website. Also can issue more complex ftp commands like mget etc.

I'd love to have the fully funtional pro version, but I don't use it enough to justify a pay-for version.

Thanks very much for what you've given us.

I use WS_FTP LE, as the best, but if not available I use Internet Explorer.
At the computer Club, I recommend FTP LE, if they can't find it I tell them to use Internet Explorer.

I still have your LE version on my system (just in case), but I'm using the Core FTP Lite program because it is free. I was very disappointed when you started charging for this service. Sorry bout that! I'm in hopes that you will reinstate, and support your "free" FTP program.

I'm using the latest pro version, but, honestly, LE was much more stable, and I'm tempted to go back to it. Maybe the latest upgrade fixed that; haven't done enough ftp'ing to check.

I use WS FTP Pro version 7.62 2002.12.18
and in general it works very well. The only thing that I can't seem to get right is the synchronise-utility to remember my settings, but I think it is due to something I do wrong.Never mind,I just re-enter the url's every time I use this utility. The maintenance of my website is easy to do with WS FTP.I really am a satisfied customer. The only thing I would like to see added is the possibility to change the language to Dutch, especially the help-files.Maybe than I could solve my problem with the sync.utility.:-)

A hosting service that I used when I first started writing HTML and putting up small homemade websites for my friends recommended LE, because I was working for poor little churches and it was easy and free. I have loved it ever since, and it still works fine. (The webhost also donates the hosting for the churches.)

I am afraid to buy a more complex version for fear I would not know how to use it.

You can see a few of the little churches here:

I am a ROCCA (Retired Old Computing Center Administrator) and use FTP LE 5.08.2000.01.13 fairly regularly (backing up files primarily). LE is a great product and I don't have a need to upgrade to Home or Pro ... although I would like to support you guys/gals somehow (I'm afraid to upgrade because "if it ain't broke ... don't fix it")! I would be curious to know if I can delete a non-empty folder in the HOME or PRO versions ... that's the only short-coing I see in LE. If I can do that with, say, HOME I would probably buy it.

I have used LE version since approximately 1993 and I like it just fine. My personal homepage doesn't get worked on very often and I almost forget how to use FTP in between times. I do have some problems because I am a self taught computer user and some things I don't understand how to "fix". The last time I tried to work on my homepage, it said you don't support LE anymore, so now I am stuck. I have been afraid to try something more complicated. Thank you for the time when you made it available for free.

The present version is WS_FTP Pro2006.2005.05.11.
Before this version I have been using WS_FTP95 LE, WS_FTP LE and an earlier Pro-version. When I had to reinstall that Pro-version on a newer PC I had lost my key and had to return to LE, but last year decided to buy again the then latest Pro-version.
I maintain more than 20 web-pages, some of them have to be updated daily. The latter ones are more or less automatically updated.

Hi,
I'm using Professional 2006.0.0.1.
Altho I must admit, I haven't had a chance to use it much this year. I've been running back and forth to CT to care for grandchildren. Hopefully, I will get back to it soon as I want to update my pages with new info. Thanks for reminding me. The new version looks exciting but I haven't had a chance to go through the tutorial to see the changes. I used the light version in the early years, then bought the pro, and now upgraded to 2006. Great program. Thanks, again.

I'm using WS_FTP95 LE. As other people have said, it works just fine for me. The only real defect I encounter (and I encounter it just about every time I use it) is that it times out after a short period, so I have to reconnect before I can use it further.

Posted by: Mia Shinbrot at September 30, 2005 09:41 AM

WS-FTP LE because it works very well and I tried the next version and still went back to LE.

It is the very first ftp client software I have ever used. I have tried a number of ftp client software since then, but I always come back to WS-FTP LE, because it is the most efficient.

Recently I got an offer from
Ipswitch to upgrade, but lacking
any information as to the benefits
of doing so, I'll probably stay
put.

Incidentally, one of the great benefits
of your professional version is the Pro Pack,
neat set of utilities, sort of a webmaster's
Swiss army knife. But, good as it is, Pro Pack
could be really improved in a lot of areas.
For example, look at the tools available at
http://www.dnsstuff.com/.

I love the ability to see my pictures as thumbnails both on my PC and the server,. Very easy to compare.
Updating was a snap and very cheap really. Even in Australia the price of the upgrade was less than a case of beer. So for the ease of use, yes much easier than LE, I would say go for it.
Keep up the good work.

I'm another one still using WS_FTP LE version 05.08 2000.02.23. Now and again I've looked at other programs but found they were too much pain for next to no gain. WS_FTP LE does exactly what I want it to do, quickly and easily.

The one thing I would like to see is a simple statement of file and folder size, so that I know when I'm approaching the webspace limit imposed by my ISP. (Perhaps there's a tool there now that I've still not discovered?)

I use WS_FTP LE v5.08 2000.02 23
This meets my requirements for occasional website updates. I had previously used Cute FTP, but found that it hid files on the web server older than a few months so that you lost track and control of what was there. WS_FTP LE solved this problem completely, showing the files as thay are, regardless of file date.

Posted by: Howard Chetwin at October 5, 2005 04:40 PM

I use LE. It's easy and no frills and doesn't take a lot of memory and disk space and it's one less thing I HAVE to study. I am a part time student and many of my classes are via internet as college is about an hours drive. There are a number of college sites that still provide LE to download for students. I think it's lousy that you're charging for something that students and faculty and non profits have come to rely on for years. But as my instructor says, there are plenty of others to try out if LE can't keep up with the operating systems. I don't have to worry about it just yet as I'm still using Win98se to boot - upgrading is not in every student's budget.
It appears ipswitch is not just trying to appeal to to users that will pay, but forcing the issue.

I use the LE-edition for about 4-5 years already. I did try the 'pro' version but preferred the LE one, that is a lot simpler (at least to me).

What I like the most about this sw is that you see both sides - your own computer and where it is going or coming to/from.

I've been using LE version 5.08 for several years and it does all I want to maintain our village website. Nice and simple to use and it transferred to my XP computer from 98 with no problem.

I use LE for a long time now and I verry happy.
It's working well on my XP PC. I try differend
FTP programs butt still come back to my LE the
best for me.

I am using LE 5.08.
It is simple, and does a lot more than I need. I usually transfer a file once every month or two, and it also allows me to delete what I have transferred from the remote site.

Using Professional 2006.0.1.0 - which I haven't yet used as I've been on holidays.

It looks really good, but as I am still disrupted and also changing ISP's it may be a little time before I do use it.

The prev versions I've had were great, so I expect this will be, too. Otherwise I wouldn't have bought it.

I am still using WS_FTPLE v. 5.08 2000.02.23 I have been using WS_FTPLE since 1998 (I am now in now
in graduate school).

Do they not have a more recent version of
WS_FTPLE or have they phased it out?

I love the ease of using WS_FTPLE and I tried a
trial of Pro four or five years ago and I did not
like it.

Jammy,

WS_FTP LE has been phased out and replaced with WS_FTP Home. Go to http://www.ftpplanet.com/WS_FTPLE.html for more info.

The Pro version has changed a lot in the last few years. Check out the trial again and see if you like it now (there's also a free trial of WS_FTP Home available from www.ipswitch.com)
