What's a port number?

When connecting to an FTP site, you may be told to use a specific port number. The default port number is 21, but an FTP site administrator can specify a different one. So, what exactly is a port number?

Think of it like this: if an FTP address is like a phone number, then the port number is like an internal extension. A bit more technically, a port is a doorway (or open connection) between programs (in the case of FTP, an FTP client and an FTP server).
