How FTP Works

I was browsing through some old WS_FTP user guides and came across an excellent description of how FTP works:

"File Transfer Protocol uses the client-server model: one computer (the FTP Host) runs a server program "serving up" information to other computers. The other computers run client programs requesting information and receiving replies from the server.

WS_FTP Pro turns your PC into an FTP client, allowing it to communicate with virtually all types of FTP sites. When your PC is connected to the Internet (via a modem or local area network), WS_FTP Pro can connect to any system that has a valid Internet Address and contains an FTP server program. Once connected to an FTP site, you can download files, upload files, and copy files from one FTP site to another."

The "Google Subpeona"

Has everyone heard about the news story they're calling the "Google Subpeona"? Here is ABC News' article on the story and CNet has a good Q&A on the topic.

I find the story very interesting and thought everyone else would too. What does everyone think about this?

Back to FTP-related items next time.

FTP features

We all use FTP to transfer files, but what else do you use FTP for? What would be your most requested FTP feature?

Refresh

If you've recently transferred files but don't see them showing up in the local or remote pane of your FTP client, try refreshing the view (in WS_FTP 2006, you can do this by pressing the 'Refresh' button in the local/remote toolbar or by pressing the F5 key).

Featured Post: Limited to 2000 Matches?

Harris posted a question to the forums asking why he could only see 2000 matches when trying to list his files.

The answer is that the server being connected to has set up this limitation. Unfortunately, there's nothing that can be done on the client side. The best solution is to contact the FTP site administrator and ask them to remove this limitation.

Moving Connection Tabs

In WS_FTP 2006, you can easily move the connection tabs by simply dragging and dropping them to where you want them.

The connection tabs show you which sites you have open at a given time. You can see them in this screenshot (click it to enlarge) labelled as "Ipswitch Public FTP Server" and "Internet Audio Archive"

How do you buy software?

When you purchase software, do you typically purchase online or do you like to have a CD/box shipped to you?

I've always preferred downloadable software for utilities but really like to have the CD/box for games.

New FTP user? Start here...

If you're new to FTP (and WS_FTP in particular), there's a KnowledgeBase article on ipswitch.com that is very helpful. It is located here in its entirety, but the important info is right here:

"When you first open WS_FTP Pro you will see a connection screen. Click on My Sites, then locate the single monitor screen above My sites and click on it (when you point to it will popup and say New Site).

You will need to fill in information about the FTP server you want to connect to.

Here you will be asked to give it:
1.) A name
2.) the IP address or hostname of the FTP server
3.) User ID
4.) Password

At this point you can click Finish because most servers do not require info for Account, Local Folder, Remote folder etc, and these can be set up later when you have a better idea of what folders you need to be in when you first connect, but for now they can be blank.

Now you are ready to sign in and start transferring files. Make sure that you are connected to the internet and press Connect."

Customizing the Double-Click

In WS_FTP Professional and Home (versions 9 and later), you can change what the double-click action does. By default, the double-click will execute a file. You can easily change this to do nothing, to view a file or to transfer a file.

To change the double-click setting, click 'Tools' and then 'Options' and then select 'Display' in the left-hand column.

In the lower right corner of the display options screen is the double-click setting. Choose your prefence from the drop-down menu and click OK.
