I first used FTP back in 1997 in my very first HTML class. The professor had us all download a copy of WS_FTP LE to upload our assignments to the college server. Who knew that a few short years later I would be working at the company that develops WS_FTP and working on this site!

First used ftp in 1997 when it was the lite version. At that time, my page was quite large, covering all the NASCAR series. Spent up to four hours a day working on the page and uploading files and pictures. As time went on, and NASCAR started cutting back on what they sent me, the page got smaller. But have continued to use FTP to manage my files.

I first used FTP when I started using the computer at the university where I taught. I started a newsgroup on fine arts with a professor from the computer science department in 1992 and I was given a university account to do the work on and one of the things that the setup came with was WFTP so I used it to download files and games to my account. Then in 1996 when I got my own pc I continued to use FTP to download files. I found that with dialup FTP downloaded at much faster speeds than using a webpage.

I first use FTP was in 1995. It was for work. The parent company was in the US and I needed a sample model that was then too big to send thru to my email account. They asked me to download that from their site via FTP.

I took a library-related, information technology class the end of 1996. Part of that class was to develop our library's website. However, I had already dabbled in my own personal website before that, so I'd say I started using FTP in early 96 if not sooner (prodigy -- remember them??) I couldn't say for sure what prog I used back then, but I know that WS_FTP95 was a very early favorite --
After that class I realized that I really enjoyed "doing" websites, so I started a small business on the side, which now includes programming in HTMLOS. --
I use the PRO version now, but I sometimes miss the simplicity and stability of LE! --
PS: the comments window wraps to unseen margins, so is a pain to proofread!

I first used ftp in 1998 when making my webpage to show relatives and friends pictures of the grandkids, I was with AT&T at the time, I remember spending hours trying to get a page "right" - seems so simple now, but then every thing is once you know how!

First used FTP back in 1990 or so with Fetch on my Mac IIcx. Before that it was protocols such as kermit and zmodem. I was downloading programs and source code from the Info-Mac archives at sumex-aim.stanford.edu - alas now offline. Slow at 2400 baud though - eventually upgraded the modem to a speedy 9600 baud model.

I first used ftp when I moved my website from a free server (Geocities) to my own domain. That would have been around 2001-2002.
I started off with LE but now use Pro.
When I started off I never thought that I'd be able to explain to other people how to use ftp - miracles do happen!!

I started using FTP in 1991, 92 or 93 when I picked up my first copy of the "Internet Yellow pages" when it was about 2" thick, "creak" goes my back!!! Was trying to download some program on juggling from a Michigan or Washington St. university server. I can attribute all of my juggling expertise to that server and FTP, Thanks

FTP in the days of DOS:
Go to a Dos prompt and type FTP
There were no password boxes, and no windows where you could drag and drop files. You either put a file or you get a file. Aah! The good old bad old days! We were sending files from minicomputers (about the size of a trailer) to mainframes (about the size of a house).

Aroudn 1992 on a NeXT workstation at Western Michigan University. That's all we had to download files before Mosaic came out. Archie, FTP, Gopher, those were a blast. You had to have a brain back then to get online. Those were the golden days before the Assholes On Line (AOL) majority decided to ruin it and junk the web with their personal blogs (low bandwidth trash) and photos (high bandwidth trash). It's mostly a wasteland now of misinformation unless you pay for it, which is never what it was intended for.

I first used ftp when I was teaching computer science at Mission High School in 1989. I attended a workshop at the University of Texas for AP Computer Science and heard about a resource for APCS lesson plans. The only way to get them was to telnet to the site and download the selected resources through ftp. They were great lessons so I used the site a lot.

I started using FTP in November 1990 transfering files and data between Air National Guard base in Oklahoma nad my base in Oregon. I've used many versions since then and have had great success in moving data from A to B. Thanks for the great products

Well, it was long before it became what its is now. It was several computers ago and the original person was making it available.
I suppose, you should have better records than I have, but I expect, it would go back to the original time it became available.

I first used ftp in 1996 to upload my 1st website, it was at that time recommended to me by a colleague of mine in the USA.
From day one I have been comfortable using ftp and have used nothing else since.

I first used FTP about 3 years ago, when I joined a computer modeling group for Microsoft Train Simulator. I use it at least 3 times a week to transfer files back and forth between the 5 members of our group.
I still don't understand the details of how it works, but I don't need to because the LE Edition is so easy to use.

03/01/2006. I first used the ws_ftp 95, when I first uploaded our churches web page, that I had just made, with Microsoft Word, on August 13, 1999.

My introduction was in 1994 when my hosting company showed me how to upload to my site. I was amazed at how fast it was. I used it for years, but when Front Page required their own software to upload (FTP messed up the upload acording to "Bill"), I was not happy.

I made a comment yesterday as to when I first used Ipswich ftp. The comment you have posted in my name Quote"I first used FTp95 which i still use, i have never taken any computer classes, so i used FTP95 by useing the help, and someone as dumb as me can use it then anyone can" Un-Quote are not my words, it beat's me how they were placed in my name.
My comment was that I first used Ipswich ftp in 1996 and have used it ever since. I was introduced to the software by a colleague from the USA.

Hi John, I think your comment came out correctly. My blogging software puts your comment above your name, not below, but I can see the confusion since it puts the horizontal line above your name (it looks like a separator). Sorry about the confusion -Van K

When we started to use IBM AS/400 computer
1989 I imported some files from our 'old'
computer with FTP.
Later 1999 when the AS/400 had to give it's
position as production data collector to a
newer machine the use of FTP was already like
'daily bread' for data transfer.

03/02/2006. I first used the ws_ftp 95, at the suggestion of, General Board of Global Ministries (GBGM) of the Methodist Church, when I first uploaded our churches web page, that I had just made, with Microsoft Word, on August 13, 1999.
We still use Microsoft Word to make our web page and use ws_ftp le to upload it to our server.
Posted by: CarlEP-- at March 2, 2006 04:52 AM
First time, it was 1995, I used WSFTP95 around the ending of 1995 to download files and I was amazed of how easy and fast could be the process.
The use of Archie was wonderful in that days, because you could find useful files in many places aroudn the world.
I still have that program, i don't use too much now because i'm using a newer version, but i's romantic to use the old one, it's like a Sunday ride in the old 1968 Mustang.

I used FTP before we had Windows. Good old DOS.

I first used FTP to download a copy of Wordperfect 5.0 from the university mainframe to about 9 floppy disks. It took a while but I thought it was great at the time.

I first started used ftp in 1999. I was a new computer user with so much to learn, then I had lost my mother and sister in a tragic boating accident, and wanted to put a web site up in their memory. I knew nothing, but did my best for the little knowledge I had, learning every step of the way. Then it was ready to upload. I contacted my server asking what do I do now and how do I get the site on the web. They were a very good source of information, having instructions on their web site for the uploading using ftp. I have 20 sites uploaded to date and use ftp on a daily basis.

Metro Community College, Omaha Ne introduced me to WS-LE. When I was taking some introduction web classes in 2000. I really liked it and still use it. I have Dreamweaver that has site transfer but I still find myself using the Home edition that I upgraded to. It's all what you get use to. Reading other postings the trend of the use of your product, seems to come from teachers. Where would we be without them?
Posted by: Shelly Beyer at March 2, 2006 07:07 PM
Hi Shelly: You are correct...teachers are usually the person who introduces FTP to someone, usually while teaching something else (like web page design). The same can be said for a lot of other software. That's why Ipswitch offers discounts for the educational market on WS_FTP Home (see
www.ipswitch.com/products/ws_ftp/home/education.asp) and many other companies do the same. Thanks for the comment!

I first used FTP about three years ago when our web page person (who was being paid!) did not do the work at updating or replying to our mail. So I asked a colleague "What to do" I was introduced to Ftp. I use it in conjuction with Nvu - and this usually works well for me - I do not have any formal training - I learn by trial and error!!

About 5 years ago I started learning HTML, the old fashioned way, without an editor. Raw as I could be.. I started decoring web space for other people, as a volunteer for the site. The 1st ftp was aol's.. till they got wise and stopped that. So in search, a friend sent me to ftpplanet, I got WS FTP-LE95 LE, still using it, every day, for many years now.
