Also on the topic of speed...
Like many programs, FTP may work slower when you have more features enabled. For example, if your FTP client has SSL or SSH enabled, the transfer may be slower than a non-secure transfer.
You can also speed up transfers by optimizing your files before you transfer them. Digital photos, for example, are usually large files and can often be optimized for use on the web.
