'Retry Transfers'
In WS_FTP -- and probably other FTP clients -- you can decide what happens when a transfer fails by setting the retry options.
In WS_FTP 2006, open the Options screen (Tools > Options) and then choose 'Transfers' from the left-hand column. The first two options let you determine how many times to retry failed transfers and how long to wait between retries.
If you don't want WS_FTP to retry failed transfers, just set the number of retries to zero.

What's Missing From FTP?
Is there a feature that you'd like to see in an FTP client? Or perhaps there is something you would like to see improved? Let us know what it is.
There are a lot of "hidden" features and workarounds...if we know of a way to do what you want, we'll tell you.
We will also pass your requests on to the WS_FTP development team.

Also on the topic of speed...
Like many programs, FTP may work slower when you have more features enabled. For example, if your FTP client has SSL or SSH enabled, the transfer may be slower than a non-secure transfer.
You can also speed up transfers by optimizing your files before you transfer them. Digital photos, for example, are usually large files and can often be optimized for use on the web.

FTP Speed Tips and Troubleshooting
We have a new article up on FTPplanet that provides tips on increasing your FTP speed. We know a lot of you wonder why your FTP transfers aren't as fast as you'd expect, so put together this article to provide some information on increasing FTP speed. It may come as a surprise but the issue may have nothing to do with your FTP client...
Excerpt: "If you've every found yourself asking why your FTP client isn't transferring files as fast as you'd expect, a key thing to remember is that there are a lot of external factors that determine FTP speed. Your FTP client is just a small piece of the puzzle.
These five questions will help you determine what may be causing slow transfers for you and may help you increase your speed."

FTP on Wikipedia
The File Transfer Protocol article on Wikipedia makes for some good reading. A lot of the content is a bit more technical than we usually use here on FTPplanet but it is still a good read.

All You Need To FTP Is...
There are only two things you really need in order to use FTP (besides the obvious...a computer, internet connection, hands, etc. :-)
1. Web space: You need a place on the internet to put your files. Many ISPs offer a small amount of web space as a part of your monthly fee (AOL and Comcast customers do).
2. An FTP client: FTPplanet recommends WS_FTP but there are others out there, including the command line FTP that comes with Windows. Need more information on FTP clients? That's what FTPplanet is here for. Have a browse around...

UPPA Uses WS_FTP Server
UPPA? Who's that? The Universal Pictorial and Press Agengy is using WS_FTP Server to manage their database of images (database of images? thumbnails feature? a perfect fit!).
The press release says, "A major part of UPPA’s service is to provide a daily supply of news pictures to UK national newspapers including the The London Times and The Guardian."
This is a pretty cool use of WS_FTP Server.

The Upload Wizard
Today's blog entry comes courtesy of guest blogger Aul B:
"I don't know about other users of WS FTP but once I have my files uploaded I hardly need to open the program.
I use the 'right click' option, of "Upload using the WS FTP Upload Wizard", after I make changes to my 'HTML" files. This was and still is my primary way of uploading all the different files of my various sites. Of course, I only have three sites to deal with, which makes this method my preferred choice of upload.
I like this way because it stores the latest uploads for easy access (under "Remote folder or URL address") in a drop down box or you can chose 'browse' to find a file.
Its easy, simple, non complicated, straight forward, well you get the idea.
Its probably alittle like a 'Hot Drop' thingy but without it taking up space in my folders.
It seems to be a thingy that is a bit overlooked when it comes to WS FTP."

Taking the Leap
From the Ipswitch corporate newsletter:
Taking the Leap-The Upgrade
The mere mention of the word "upgrade" strikes a chord of panic, apprehension or suspicion within many software users. As users becomes comfortable with their current product, many refuse to consider changing solutions.
The reality is that many people require enhanced features, expanded technology and added functionality as their position, company or circumstances outgrow their current solution. Upgrading is often a necessary and logical step to help you work more effectively, faster and more cost-efficiently.
In fact, a recent Ipswitch survey revealed that many Ipswitch WS_FTP Home users are outgrowing its basic functionality and are upgrading to the advanced security and automation capabilites of WS_FTP Professional.
With WS_FTP Professional packing key features such as synchronization, email notifications and compression mode, WS_FTP Home users are finding that taking the leap isn't so scary and upgrade isn't a bad word. Find out how you can upgrade from WS_FTP Home/LE with ease here.

Helpful Online Tools
We all know that search engines such as Google and Yahoo are great tools but there are so many others. What websites and tools do you use?
I like using Technorati and Google's Blog Search for finding new blogs and YouTube for finding video online.

Email Notifications
In WS_FTP Professional 2006, you can set everything up to notify yourself or others when specific actions occur, including:
- A file has been uploaded
- A download was successful
- A transfer failed
- A file or folder is ready for others to access
You can customize the message to include as little or as much information as you want. Take a look at this screenshot for an example:
The e-mail can, of course, be sent to your desktop client, cell phone, blackberry, PDA or any other device that can receive emails.
Download the WS_FTP Pro trial and try it out for yourself.
