How do you search?
We're curious how you search for information online? Do you go to a search engine? Have you gotten in the habit of searching from a toolbar or desktop search program? Maybe you search from your ISPs home page?
Let us know by leaving a comment. We'll choose one comment at random to receive a free copy of WS_FTP (winner's choice: Home, Pro or PhotoMover).

I first start my search from the toolbar. If unsuccessful, I then go to a search engine. I try to be as specific as possible to save time and eliminate having to weed too much data.

Yes, everything I am interested goes in Google, and sometimes Yahoo search engine. I know Big
brother is looking but I still use them
anyway.
Today I was interested in FTP sites.

I use Google toolbar, sometimes Altavista and Yandex for search on Russian sites
Posted by: Olga at April 17, 2006 03:59 AM
I use altavista.com as my first choice. If I don't find what I need, I'll try dogpile.com. If both of these fail, I will then search google.com, but only as a last resort. I don't mean to badmouth Google, I just prefer the results I get with the other two.

back in the day, I would only use googles search engine...
Now I am about 50% search engine, 50% toolbar...
I try the tool bar first, then the search engine if I wasn't lucky with the toolbar.

google website for everything - no toolbar crap.
Posted by: curt at April 17, 2006 04:52 PM
Most of the time I use Google by going to their website. I am not in the habit of using the toolbar search. I get annoyed at the search options such as "Starware" that attach itself to my taskbar!

I use Netscape 7.2 as my browser most of the time. It has a Netscape search utility on the toolbar so I use that. It is easy and I don't have to click on additional icons. I also use Netscape 8.1 which lets you choose which search engine to use on the toolbar. 8.1 also has a drop down list within the search box so you can go to other search engines very easily without having to load a different web page.

I generally use the Google toolbar and advanced search to narrow my choices to a managable number, but I am looking for an alternative that is less invasive. I have also used dogpile.

Started using Google.com years ago. Worked just fine then, and it works fine now.

Generally I start with a search engine called Search, sometimes I also use Yahoo! to find something specific of my country. I work with successive refinigs of the search.
Posted by: claudio severi at April 20, 2006 06:32 PM
I put a link to the google search engine on my own (custom designed) home page. About 75% of my web searches start here.
I often move from there to the 'advanced' search with google.
For specialised information (about 20% of my searches) I go to specific engines that find specific information I use. I get access to these from my home page too.

I start with Google and then use other search engines if I am not successful in getting the information I am seeking.

I use the Google search engine. It is on the Opera Browser Toolbar. Over the years I have found that Google gives me the best results for the items I usually search for.
Posted by: Alan Moeck at April 20, 2006 09:21 PM
I use FIREFOX with GOOGLE, YAHOO or any
specialise search engine, depending on what I am looking for.
Posted by: Pierre Desjardins at April 20, 2006 09:24 PM
I start with Google. I have set preferences for my style of searching, and keep that one cookie in the cookie folder, deleting all others.
I find if I keep honing my search parameters, I can usually dig up what I need there.
If not, I have family access to University Search Engines, and can search those databases.
As for toolbars, I have a lot going on in my system, and do not install any unnecessary features.

My service provider is the largest user helping user group in the southern hemisphere, there home page has most of the search engines but I still prefer "Google" especial since they hijacked my web page. At least now I get a few hits :-)) Try it look for "Mcgannity"

I use a Google Toolbar within Avant Browser (..Avant hard to beat for tabbed browsing by the way). I find the Toolbar quick and easy. Rather than use other search engines if my first search doesn't throw up what I am searching for, I refine the search words or phrase in Google, sometimes using info on the the first Google search to help. Very rarely fail to find what I want with Google..

I generally run a Goolgle search from the toolbar.
Posted by: Ellen Lebelle at April 21, 2006 03:29 AM
For specific technical information (bibliography, products, etc) I got directly to the homepages of the respective suppliers. Otherwise I use Google as search engine, but often it is time consuming filtering out all the secondary references shown.

I search the internet with the Google.ca search engine and the Google toolbar running on MS IE.

I use the Google toolbar. I cannot think of a single program that has had more impact on society as a whole than the Google search engine ... even more than e-mail. It is THE most remarkable program ever written.

I search using my Google toolbar. I used to like dogpile.com. I still use them for a different view sometimes. In depth searchs go through Google first, MSN second, AOL third. Usually don't find much new after checking with Google. But I gotta look!

Google, usually, or, if for a word's spelling
or meaning, Answers.com. The Firefox browser
has a neat shortcut for word look ups. Just
type "dict word" (without the quotes) into
its address bar and the web site does the rest, coughing up what it knows about word. If it
doesn't recognise "word", it guesses and
gives you choices. ~ B :^Þ

Normally I use Google Toolbar or Roboform Toolbar or Yahoo Toolbar.
Posted by: Monica at April 27, 2006 05:28 PM
For routine search (e.g. for sculptor Niki de Saint Phalle) I normally use Google via my ISP (BellSouth) home page.
If I am looking for a specific fact (e.g. when was Winston Churchill born?), I go to Ask.com (Ask Jeeves).
If I'm looking for an address or phone number, I go to anywho.com .
If I'm looking for a map or driving directions, I usually go to AAA(TripTik) or MapQuest.

For desktop search, really like Copernic. For my use, it was faster than Google and excellent for searching email.
would be nice if you could integrate google or coperinic into ws_ftp pro.
For web, really like Google's toolbar.

I'm a librarian.
Google is great -- BUT - Consider going to the home page of your local Public Library. There are many databases that your library pays for, like back issues of the New York Times or perhaps Consumer Reports or even Literature resources.
You should also consider your particular purpose and need for the information: a .com site may provide an good resource for a specific purpose such as a company's annual report, but may not fill a need for an unbiased review of a product or service provided by the company.
Look for an .edu or .gov for unbiased information.

Hello!
I have been searching the net since Arpanet came on. Today I am useing the most simple solutions first (as Google and Yahoo) then I have a folder with different engine sites and crawlers to choose from that may combine engines in a search. I have installed Yahoo toolbar and the resident Explorer search. I am useing other tools under Linux. Besides English I am useing all Scandinavian languages and some times German. Some informations are difficult to get hold of even I know it's there some place. The results may not be what I search for at all, but nonsene or advertising.

I use Google primarily. If I want more in-depth journal or academic articles, I'll use college and university library sites. I can do that as a college employee, but I believe some sites allow guest access. There are many good government sites as well.
