A Cautionary Tale
Download.com has a short cautionary tale on being careful while you search. The article talks of someone visiting a "cracks" web site and getting a computer full of spyware. Here is an excerpt:
"We went to a software "cracks" site I thought was safe because I had used it before for similar reasons. Unfortunately, this time my friend wasn't so lucky. I assume the site exploited a hole in my friend's outdated version of Internet Explorer because the site downloaded so many types and iterations of spyware and adware, I can't even begin to list them."
Read the rest of the article here.
The bottom line is to make sure you keep Internet Explorer updated (you can check if you're on the latest version by visiting http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and following the prompts.

Top Three Ways to Transfer
1. 'Arrowing' -- Using the arrows in the center of your FTP client to transfer files from the remote to local side and vice versa.
2. Drag-and-drop -- Dragging files with the mouse cursor to transfer files between panes, or between your FTP client and desktop.
3. Copy-and-paste -- A classic technique. You can do this using either the 'Edit' menu, the right-click pop-up menu or a keyboard shortcut.

Want a Better RSS Reader? Get Snarfer!
Over the past few weeks, I've been using a great new feedreader called Snarfer. It's extremely easy to use with a clean interface and was very easy to import my feeds into.
Snarfer has become my reader of choice and -- best of all -- it's free! Give it a try and tell them FTPplanet sent you.

"Designing a website aesthetically"
I came across a great article for webmasters in the Deccan Herald.
The article talks about website design and testing in a very clear way. Here is a short excerpt (visit the Deccan Herald website for the full article.
"As a netizen, you've seen many Web sites. Now you want to setup one for your company or for yourself. The good news is that you don't have to be a professional to create basic sites! For this work, you just need to have a WYSIWYG software, such as Microsoft FrontPage Express or Netscape Composer. Although not necessary, a bit of HTML experience will be a definite plus to tweak the code, if required, to fine-tune the page.
Now you're all set to design the page. How to go about this task? Let the user be the focus of your design. Then, develop all other elements of the site around this most important entity." more

Help! The files I transferred are corrupted!
If you find yourself saying this, you probably transferred a binary file in ASCII mode. Doing this can damage the file.
ASCII mode is for transferring text files (which include HTML files). Binary is for most other file types (graphics, music, etc.).
If you're not sure what mode to use, select the 'Auto' option.

Do you have an FTP server? Here are some tips.
Based on the most common FTP problems we hear of, here are a few tips for FTP server administrators:
- Be sure to have your FTP server live so that people can connect to it.
- Test your FTP server before allowing people to connect. This includes testing permissions.
- Speaking of permissions, be careful not to give users permissions that they shouldn’t have. You don't want someone to accidently delete files.
- Keep logs of all activity. This can help you troubleshoot should a problem occur.

Transferring Hidden Files
In WS_FTP, there is an easy way to transfer hidden files if you know the name of the files. All you need to do is hit the transfer arrow without selecting a file(s) in the local or remote windows.
WS_FTP will prompt you for the filename you'd like to transfer. Just type in the name of the hidden file you want to transfer and WS_FTP will transfer it.

Navigate to a Folder
In WS_FTP, you can type the name of the folder you want to navigate to in the navigation bar. This can often be the quickest way to get to the folder you want to be in.
The navigationbar is in the center of this screenshot with the directory 'tutorials/Active_Edit' showing:

Transfer Information
In WS_FTP 2006, there is a lot of information you can retrieve on transfers. At the bottom of the WS_FTP screen, there are three tabs:
- Transfer Manager: Keeps track of your current and scheduled transfers.
- Transfer History: Just as it sounds...a history of recent transfers.
- Connection Log: A record of the "conversation" between your FTP client and the FTP server you are connecting to. If you have problems during a transfer, this is the place to look for an error message.
