Missing File List
Have you ever connect to an FTP site and found that the file/directory list was empty or blank? If so, the problem is most likely that you need to change to passive mode (Tools > Site Manager > Select Site > Click Edit > Advanced > 'Use passive mode...')
If this doesn't resolve the problem, you can also try selecting 'Automatic Detect' in the host type dropdown on that same 'Advanced' screen.

Network Timeout
In WS_FTP (and many other FTP clients), there is an option called network timeout that determines how long WS_FTP will wait for an FTP site to respond.
You can edit this setting in WS_FTP's Site Manager. First, select the site you want to edit from the Sites list and click the 'Edit' button.
Nest, select the Advanced dialog option and look for the 'Network timeout' option. Enter the number of seconds you want WS_FTP (or whatever FTP client you use) to wait for a response and click OK.

Case Sensitivity
Remember, FTP usernames and passwords are case sensitive. When creating a username, it's a good idea to use a mix of captial and lowercase letters for added security.
In some instances, you also need to be careful of case sensitivity in file neames too. This all depends on operating systems (in most modern Windows environments, it won't matter).

Yahoo! Tech
Yahoo! has a great new section up about technology products called Yahoo! Tech (at least, it's new to me).
It's a very well put together site with information on cameras, MP3 players, TVs, etc.
I've been enjoying their bloggers.

New Web Browsers
CNet has a nice overview up of the latest browser versions (IE, Firefox and Opera). Included in the article is a nice chart that shows what browser will have what new features. Click here to read the article.
Most interesting to me is that Opera will include BitTorrent and that Internet Explorer will add tabs.

"BitTorrent Goes Hollywood"
BusinessWeek has an article on BitTorrent this week: "BitTorrent Goes Hollywood". BitTorrent is a technology that allows a single file to be downloaded from multiple sources at the same time, shortening transfer times. BitTorrent isn't mainstream yet but is popular in some circles.
The BusinessWeek article discusses how Hollywood is looking at using this technology and how it hopes to avoid previous problems with file-sharing technologies.

"How do you search?" Winner
Congratulations to Andrea, who responded to our recent "How do you search?" question/contest. Andrea wins a free copy of WS_FTP (either Professional, Home or PhotoMover -- her choice).
Andrea says:
"I'm a librarian. Google is great -- BUT - Consider going to the home page of your local Public Library. There are many databases that your library pays for, like back issues of the New York Times or perhaps Consumer Reports or even Literature resources.
You should also consider your particular purpose and need for the information: a .com site may provide an good resource for a specific purpose such as a company's annual report, but may not fill a need for an unbiased review of a product or service provided by the company.
Look for an .edu or .gov for unbiased information.
Andrea"

Thursday's Tip: Transfer Information
Everytime we mention this, we hear feedback on how great it is.
Quickly check the total size of files/folders you are about to transfer by highlighting those files/folders, then right clicking and choosing 'Properties' from the pop-up menu. You'll see summary information, which also includes the total size of your transfer, how many files are about to be transferred and more.

Wednesday's Tip: Changing Filenames Before Transfer
This one's an extremely popular trick...you can change the name of a file at the time of transfer. Just highlight the file you want to transfer and then hold down your CTRL key before trasnferring the file.
WS_FTP will prompt you for a new filename...type it in and click 'OK' to transfer your file under the new name!
This is a mostly unknown feature in WS_FTP but can be a great help.

Top 5 FTP Tips -- All This Week
This week we're counting down the top 5 FTP tips. Today: ASCII vs. Binary:
When using FTP to transfer files, it is always best to use ASCII mode for text-based files -- this includes .txt, .htm, .html, .asp, .js and other files you can easily edit in notepad. Use binary for all other file types -- .jpg, .gif, .zip, .exe, .wmv, etc.
If the FTP client you're using has an 'Auto' option, this is your best bet. This way, you don't need to think about the best mode to transfer in.
