Secure FTP
In response to yesterday's post, Randy asks: "Is there a reason why the HOME edition doesn't support Secure FTP?"
WS_FTP Home has some security features (FTPS and SSL) but the Professional version has additional security features (SFTP, SSH and HTTPS).
So, why less security in the Home version? WS_FTP Home provides more of the basic FTP features and many of the advanced features (including SFTP) are additional and exclusive benefits of the Professional version.

WS_FTP Gets Refresh
ServerWatch notes of the WS_FTP 2007 release:
"WS_FTP Pro also delivers complete integration with desktop search technologies from Google, Copernic, and Windows. Users can find and instantly transfer files, as well as sort, compress, zip, encrypt, and send them with a single mouse click. Search can be done from parameters that include file names and file contents, search data range, and file type. Parameters on transfer can also be set, for example, to only new or updated files, with control over the direction of synchronization."

More thoughts on WS_FTP 2007...
Gadgetopia has posted some thoughts on the new WS_FTP 2007.
I enjoy reading Gadgetopia on a regular basis and appreciate their point of view on WS_FTP. There are some great points on when something like an FTP client becomes something ... more. I know that the new features in WS_FTP Professional were all developed based on user feedback (even skins, which were actually included in the previous version).
Of course, there's always the Home version for those that want a more basic FTP client.

Overwriting Files
Generally, FTP sites let you overwrite an existing file. More often than not, you don't receive any warning that a file is about to be overwritten. WS_FTP lets you choose what happens when a file is about to be overwritten:
First, open the Options screen and select the Transfers screen. You will see a 'File Overwrite Prompt' section, which gives you three options:
1. Don't prompt for overwrite (always overwrite)
2. Prompt for overwrite if file exists
3. Prompt for overwrite for same or new files only
Click the radio button of your choice and click 'OK'

Let WS_FTP Assign Filenames
With WS_FTP, you can make sure that downloaded or uploaded filenames do not conflict with existing files.
WS_FTP does this by adding a number between 000 and 999 before the file extension.
To set up this functionality:
1. Go to the Site Manager
2. Select an FTP site ftom the Sites list
3. Click Edit
4. Select the Transfer page
5. Select Receive Unique
...and you're ready to go!

Change Destination Filename
In WS_FTP, if you hold the CTRL key down while transferring a file, you will be prompted for a destination filename.
This is one of WS_FTP's hidden gems and is one of my favorite features.
