Splogs

Over the last year, I've noticed that FTPplanet content was being reproduced on blogs that were clearly spam. The intent of these splogs (spam + blogs, as Wired calls it) was clearly to generate money through advertising.

Basically, the hope is that the copied content would appear in a search result, that someone would click on the search result and, upon realizing the blog is spam, goes on to click an ad. The owner of the splog gets some money every time someone clicks.

So, it was with great interest that I read this Wired article: Spam + Blogs = Trouble.

The article expands on all of this quite a bit and is a very interesting read.
