Ten Tips for New Webmasters

From our New Webmaster's Guide:

1. Keep all text simple and short. Visitors to your site don't want to read lengthy paragraphs and could be inclined to leave.

2. Make site navigation accessible and simple. Design a navigation system that is fully functional but doesn't take away from the site's important content.

3. Avoid loud, obtrusive graphics and text. Although it is tempting to use loud graphics and animations, they often prove to be eyesores to visitors and make your site look less professional.

4. Keep web site copy (text) active. Active text is much more attractive and creates an atmosphere of interactivity within your site. Use words that suggest ideas to visitors such as get, download and try.

5. Be consistent with your site. Don't use multiple themes, navigation structures or graphic designs. Although it may seem to be a good idea, inconsistency creates confusion.

6. Avoid over-commercialization. Too many ad banners and buttons may appear to be web-based SPAM.

7. Organize content well. Make it easy for visitors to find the information they are looking for.

8. Place important links and crucial information first. Worry about the details after.

9. Keep pages, graphics and downloads small in file size. Most visitors are using dial-up modems and can't afford to wait for your page to load.

10. Check your site from all angles. Make sure your page looks great and works as you intend on a variety of systems with various configurations. Make sure to look at your website in various versions of both Netscape and Internet Explorer.
