WS_FTP Home or WS_FTP Pro?

Many people ask me what the biggest differences are between WS_FTP Home and the more robust WS_FTP Professional file transfer clients.

Here's a great summary link that I found on the Ipswitch website. Basically, if all you're looking for is easy, reliable and fast file transfers then WS_FTP Home is the best product on the market for you.

But if you're interested in some advanced features like scheduling transfers, backing up files and folders, automatic .zip compression, integrated Google desktop search and server-to-server transfers then the cost to upgrade to WS_FTP Professional seems reasonable. Not to mention that WS_FTP Professional is LOADED with security features (such as 256-bit encryption for SSL & SSH transfers) to ensure that your files remain safe.

Is the new PS3 worth $600?

Does the new Playstation 3 pack enough punch to justify the high price?

CNET's bottom line: "Sony's PlayStation 3 may be the most expensive next-gen game console, and its launch titles are not all that impressive, but its swanky design and bevy of features, including a Blu-ray drive, make it hard to resist--even at $600." There is also a nice video and pictures of the PS3.

"Cyber Monday"

I'm happy to say that I successfully avoided going to the mall on "Black Friday", instead taking the less claustrophobic option of being one of a mind-boggling 7.5 million unique visitors to eBay.

It's also interesting that yesterday, often called "Cyber Monday", will see the highest web traffic this season .... and next Monday, Dec. 4, will be the biggest online purchase day of the year.

No one from Antarctica visits us :-(

While we have yet to see a single FTPplanet visitor from Antarctica, we do have visitors from all over the world.

Since FTPplanet is written in the English language, it's not a surprise that a vast majority of visitors are from the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia. However, we have visitors from 149 different countries. I won't list them all but would like to thank all of our visitors from around the world for spending time with us here at FTPplanet.

ServerWatch Reviews WS_FTP

ServerWatch recently posted a new review of WS_FTP Professional. Their review is fairly in-depth, discusses WS_FTP's security features in detail and also touches upon the WS_FTP Server product.

The review summarizes WS_FTP Professional's pros and cons:

Pros: State-of-the-art security (encryption) and a user interface that easily manages a full house of features.

Cons: The client occasional difficulty interacting with other server platforms; No anti-virus hooks on either servant or client; Windows-only products.

Using FTP from the Command Line

Windows comes pre-installed with some very basic FTP functionality, which you can access from the command line (usually accessed by going to your Start Menu, choosing Run and typing cmd).

Once at the the command prompt, type in ftp to access this functionality. If you're already familiar with FTP commands, then you can start transferring right away. If you're not exactly sure how to begin, type in help at the FTP prompt for more direction.

For example, you can connect to an FTP site by typing open followed by the site (such as open ftp.ftpplanet.com).
