Netflix to offer online streaming movie rental

Netflix is enhancing their movie rental service to allow instant viewing of rented movies by streaming them to your computer.

"For consumers under 30, they are doing so much with online video this is a natural extension of their usage paradigm on a laptop," said Netflix Chief Executive Reed Hastings

VERY cool ..... even for those of us that are over 30 years old!

Watch your PC files on your TV!

I'm hearing more and more about upcoming solutions that will make it easy for people to watch multimedia files from their computer on their TV. Personally, I think this is very exciting and amazingly useful! Here are two pretty interesting looking options:

1. SanDisk Launches Amazing PC to TV Gizmo: SanDisk's new USBTV initiative simplifies viewing multimedia files from your PC on your TV.

2. Sling Media SlingCatcher to bring video to your TV: SlingCatcher to take video content from a computer and display it on a television screen.

Vista support for WS_FTP

Here's an update from Ipswitch about WS_FTP's compatibility with Vista. Existing WS_FTP customers using the new Vista operating system can get a Vista-compatible version of WS_FTP Home or WS_FTP Pro by contacting technical support via the url below.

"The currently shipping version of WS_FTP Professional 2007 does not support Vista but a Vista compatible version is available today via our Technical Support organization. We do have a publicly available update in the works that should release in Q1 2007 that will provide full Vista support.

In the meantime, if you have a license of WS_FTP Professional 2007 or have an active Service Agreement , you are eligible for a version that is available today that runs on Vista and 64-bit OSs. Please contact Technical Support and for faster service, have your Serial Number available.

http://www.ipswitch.com/support/email_support.asp

However, Vista is currently NOT a supported operating system. While the new version may work, it's at your own risk"

Tiny cable may lead to numerous technological advances

Scientists have recently created an amazingly small cable that can transmit visible light at an alarmingly fast speed ..... and this new discovery could lead to many technology improvements.

"It's not quite the speed of light, but it's probably 90 percent the speed of light. That's still thousands of times faster than electronics. The invention has the potential to lead to numerous technological advances"

I'm trying to imagine just how small "several hundred times thinner than a human hair" actually is and all I can come up with is WOW!

Change Filename During Transfer

Did you know that you can change the name of a file when you transfer it with WS_FTP?

Simply highlight the file that you would like to transfer but instead of transferring it as you would normally, hold down the "CTRL" key and then transfer the file.

WS_FTP will prompt you for a destination filename. Simply enter the new name and click 'OK' to start the transfer.

Spyware Maker Punished

Spyware is my #2 peeve on the Internet (spam is #1).

For those of you not familiar, spyware is sometimes included with computer software and it collects personal information about users without their informed consent.

Personal information is secretly recorded in a variety ways, all of which are sneaky. Information collected ranges from overtly criminal (theft of passwords and financial details) to the merely annoying (recording Internet search history for targeted advertising, while consuming computer resources).

Anyways, nice to see the courts come down hard on a software company that used spyware to take information from its customers.

"Attorney General Rob McKenna announced yesterday a $1 million settlement with Secure Computer"

One down, several hundred thousand to go....

Breaking up is hard to do!

I recently went through the process of cancelling an online service that I subscribed to. Sounds simple enough but it turned into quite the frustrating hassle!

My ordeal fell into the "Not-So-Free Free Trials" category. Looks like this type of issue is much more common than it should be!

Online services can be a mousetrap- easy to enter, but hard to escape. PC World's reporter tried out 31 companies to see how simple or hellish they made the process of unsubscribing.

Nice summary at the end of the article that highlights ten "Big Hassle" companies that includes AOL, MSN, Napster and Real.

PGP file encryption

A couple of days ago I wrote that file transfers over SSL and SSH protocols provide secure and encrypted file transport.

Today I'm going to highlight another layer of encryption that can be used to ensure that your files and data remain secure and uncompromised.

PGP is a fairly common Internet technology for encrypting and decrypting individual files with people you select to share them with.

PGP encryption is often used to secure files that are transferred over FTP protocol. PGP is also commonly used with SSL and SSH protocol transfers to provide an added layer of file encryption on top of the encrypted transport connection.

WS_FTP Professional includes a fully-integrated OpenPGP mode that enables you to easily secure files and manage your trusted circle of people you opt to share encrypted files with.

A more detailed description of SSL, SSH and OpenPGP can be found in the WS_FTP Professional Security guide.

Google

If you haven't noticed, Google had an amazingly busy 2006. What was once simply an online search engine has expanded into areas such as online video, productivity apps (like calendar and spreadsheets), desktop search, photo organizer, and a whole bunch more.

My favorite is Google Earth. 3D maps where you can zoom from space all the way to street level. Uber cool!

Google - It's not just for searching anymore!

Encrypted transfers

Did you know that the WS_FTP Professional file transfer client lets you transfer files over FTP, SSL and SSH protocols?

The benefit of using SSL or SSH is that they automatically encrypt communications during file transfer to ensure the secure transport of your files between two locations.

Configuring a new SSL or SSH connections from WS_FTP Professional is very easy. Simply click the "Connection Wizard" icon. Choose your connection type from the dropdown menu (in this case, choose SSL or SSH) .... then simply enter the server address and your username/password and click finish. It's important to note that the server you are connecting to must accept SSL and SSH transfers.
