Put a little zoom zoom zoom in your ho ho holiday
'Tis the season for taking lots of pictures posting them to your website or blog. FTP software can be used to quickly & easily move files from your computer to other computers, servers or web hosting services.
"FTP comes in handy when creating a Web site. FTP is an acronym that stands for File Transfer Protocol. An FTP client is a program that allows you to easily move files from one computer to another.
In the case of creating a Web site, this means that if you create the pages for your site on your computer, either using a text editor or some other Web page editor, then you will need to move it to the server where your site will be hosted. FTP is the main way to do this."
If you are looking for file transfer software, check out WS_FTP Pro and get a free 30-day trial. WS_FTP is the fastest and most secure file transfer client out there.... and it happens to be the one i personally use!
Hope this tip helps you put a little zoom zoom zoom in your ho ho holiday pictures!

Setting up an FTP Server
I'm re-posting a popular topic to share with everyone: Setting up an FTP Server.
FTPPlanet has a simple tutorial about getting started with an FTP Server.
FTP Server 101 - A Beginner's Guide --
http://www.ftpplanet.com/ftpresources/ftp_server.htm
Enjoy!
Here's an excerpt:
"Setting up your FTP Server.
Setting up an FTP server is quite simple. Some software has the ability to set passwords, directory access permissions, and a number of other FTP server functions. You can experiment with these attributes as you get more comfortable with your FTP server. For now, let’s start with the basics."

Security is Critical to both Organizations & Individuals
I stumbled across this fantastic article written by Swayam Prakasha in a recent issue of Enterprise Networks & Storage. Basically, the premise of the article is that businesses are requiring more and more storage to keep all their data and documents... And at the same time, more and more attention is being placed on securing that information.
Speaking as a consumer, the increased focus on corporate security to protect confidential and private information is comforting, especially amid the seamlessley endless swirl around company data breaches.
The argument from the article absolutely applies to us here on FTPplanet as well. We all move files and data from file transfer clients to file transfer servers, and the same security cornerstones mentioned in the article that are important to businesses should be carefully considered by individuals and businesses alike when administrating a file transfer server, namely:
"Authentication: Authentication is the process by which an entity will be verified. The entity can be a login-request, SSH key, etc.
Authorization: Authorization is the process of determining which privileges are granted to whom.
Data Integrity: Integrity confirms that the data has not been modified in the process of its movement from the source to the destination.
Availability: By availability, we make sure that information and resources will be available to legitimate users all the time."
Finally, here's a list of security best practices to help ensure your important information remains uncompromised. Again, the article is a great read and it expands on each of these points so check it out!
STRONG PASSWORDS
CONFIGURATION
STRONG MANAGEMENT
REMOTE CONNECTIVITY
OPERATING SYSTEM SECURITY
ENCRYPTED PROTOCOLS - (Such as SSH & SSL!)
LIMIT AUTHENTICATED USERS
REMOTE CONNECTIVITY

New website for WS_FTP!
Looks like Ipswitch has launched a completely redesigned website for their suite of WS_FTP secure file transfer products.
The new site has more information on their flagship file transfer software: WS_FTP Home & the uber secure WS_FTP Professional as well as their acclaimed WS_FTP Server with SSH product.
I REALLY like their new sections on Healthcare, Financial Services and Retail industries..... And there is lots of great information, papers and videos in the Resources section!
Way to go WS_FTP... your new website is a huge improvement!!!

Setting up an SFTP Server on Windows
Simple FTP is becoming more and more of a less secure file transfer environment.
If you're looking for the basic steps in setting up a secure server or access another computer through SSH, I found this blog named mystudycorner.blogspot with a good posting on setting up SFTP and SSH servers.
http://mystudycorner.blogspot.com/2007/12/installing-ssh-on-windows.html
Here's an excerpt:
"Secure Shell (SSH) is a program that lets you log into another computer over a network, to execute commands in a remote machine, and to move files from one machine to another. It provides strong authentication and secure communications over insecure channels. When using ssh, the entire login session, including transmission of password, is encrypted and therefore is very secure."

WS_FTP Professional file transfer client
Here are some nice comments from ReviewCentral about how easy it is to start using the WS_FTP Professional file transfer client:
"FTP clients are numerous and offer the same basic features. The best I have found so far is Ipswitch WS_FTP Professional. It is easy to use and very simple. From start to finish, setting up and using it poses no problems. This is because after you have installed it and then launched the application for the first time, it asks you for the information it needs to connect to your server.
Here is how easy it is to use: You download the latest version. Then install it to your computer. You then have the option of launching it immediately after installation. Once launched, it asks you the type of protocol you want to use (obviously FTP, but SSH is also possible), your server address, user name and password, and a name for your site.
You also have the option of saving your password for automatic logon the next time you use the software. Easy, isn’t it?!
Ipswitch WS_FTP Professional rocks!"
