2007: A Year of Record Data Breaches

Wow, here's a sobering article by Baseline magazine that shares some scary details behind the massive increases in data breaches and identity theft in 2007.

Here's a scary tidbit: Retail was the #1 affected industry in 2007 with 24 breaches affecting almost 100 million records. One hundred million records. 100,000,000 records. Yikes!!!

The "Top 25 Data Breaches of 2007" includes two retailers whom I've given my credit card to, one financial institution that I keep money at, not to mention hospitals, schools and government offices. Double yikes.... This is personal!

I'm gonna go reread my blog post from February 12th on steps to prevent online fraud and identity theft. I'm pretty sure I gave some good advice on how to minimize my risk by being a aware person and surfing safely.
