Beginner's Guide to
Gaming
What does my computer need to play games?
Although games often have different hardware requirements, there are certainly
characteristics of a good "gaming computer".
First, a good gaming computer
should have plenty of memory. Games are very dependent upon
memory
and memory contributes more to game performance than processor speed. Although a
good processor (300mhz + ) doesn't hurt, having 64 MB
of memory or more is far more
beneficial.
Secondly, a gamer will want to have a strong video
card.
Often, games contain advanced 3d instructions and older video cards simply can't cut it.
Gamers with older video cards should try a 3d accelerat or with 3dfx.
Third, gamers should
get their hands on a decent gamepad or joystick. Often, the keyboard is
difficult to use and makes gameplay suffer. Gamepads and Joysticks can be found anywhere
and are relatively inexpensive.
Lastly, gamers should have a good sound card.
Although most overlook sound, 3d sound really enhances the gaming experience and makes
games a whole lot more fun.
Where can I get games?
Video games are not just at the electronics store any more. In fact, the Internet is full
of games of all kinds. Practically any game can be downloaded in some free
form. Whether you want to play Backgammon or Quake, the Web can help you find,
play and
conquer your game. It's simply a matter of where to look.
In order to find games, the
gamer must first know what kind of game he is looking for, as there are thousands of
places to find games on the Internet. Check
out our game hunter's guide for tips on finding the various kinds of games available out
there. Also, make sure visit our ratings
and reviews section on gaming resources.
What are multiplayer games and how to they work?
The Internet has also given
birth to new forms of gaming, such as multiplayer gaming. Essentially, multiplayer gaming
allows two gamers to play a game together through the Internet. Although the most popular
multiplayer games are 3d shooters like Quake and Unreal, virtually all new games can be
played with others online. Even the newest version of Hasbro's monopoly can be played
online.
As the Internet grows and connections improve, multiplayer games will probably
replace traditional forms of gaming. In general, multiplayer games can be initialized by
the simple sharing of an IP address. One computer generally becomes a "host"
and other computers join the game occurring on that host.
How do I get better at my favorite game?
Well, we can't exactly tell
you how to play video games, as there are thousands of games and each game is different.
However, there are lots of places on the Internet to go for help with video games.
Whether you
are looking for game cheats, hints or complete walkthroughs, help is available for almost
any game you could think of. Well, maybe not Pacman. A few examples of these sites
are Cheatcc and GameGuides.com.
A more complete list can be found here.
What is 3dfx?
3dfx is a platform for 3d gaming. 3dfx chipsets allow gamers to play graphic-intensive 3d
games with a high degree of control and realism. Some kind of 3dfx chipset is now shipped
with all 3d cards. A true gamer cannot go without such a card.
Where can I get a 3d card?
Cards are available almost anywhere. Most computer stores carry a large
variety of 3d cards (also called accelerators). If you are wondering if a card is
capable of intense 3d work, check the box for the 3dfx logo. Additionally, there are
several great websites that can help choose
the right card for you.
