Featured FTP Tip: 'Changing Port Value'
If an FTP address is like a phone number, then the
Port number is like an
internal extension. Most FTP servers use Port (or
extension) 21 and
therefore the default Port setting in WS_FTP.
However, some FTP servers
choose to use other Ports values. If an FTP
server uses a Port value other
than 21, you'll need to change the Port value in
WS_FTP in order to connect
to the site.
To change a Port value in WS_FTP Pro and LE, click on
the 'Advanced' tab in
the 'Session Properties' window. There you'll
find the 'Remote Port' field
filled in with the value '21'. Simply change
this value to the required
Port number and click the 'Apply' button.

When you first log into ZDNet's FTP site there are
number of interesting
directories. Most of them deal with Ziff Davis'
publications which include
PC Magazine, Computer Shopper, Computer Life, and many
more.
There's a little secret if you're looking for their
software library. The
files are stored in the '/pub/private' directory.
However, if you try to
navigate to this directory all you see is a 'denied'
file and nothing else.
Because the software library directory is hidden, you
can't see it.
Although it's hidden, there are no restrictions to
access it. So here's the
trick: from the root directory( / ), go to the
directory address field in
WS_FTP located above the right pane or 'Remote Site';
copy and paste the
following: /pub/private/sWlIB' (minus the
quotes) and hit [Return]. This
will take you to the entire library of files available
from ZDNet's download
site.
Before you disconnect, remember to 'Save the Current
Folders as Connection
Folders' under WS_FTP 'Options', then you can connect
right to the
software library with out having to copy and paste
anything.
