FTP TIP: User-Submitted Tip - File
Names vs. Operating Systems
This tip was submitted by Cadre:
"I
loaded our church newsletter,
"Loaves & Fishes", onto
our website
with a
filename of "L&F.pdf",
in a folder named:
"L&F". Our ISP (Internet
Service
Provider) host was running Windows NT,
and everything was fine.
Before
long, I got a call saying that the
newsletter could not be loaded
from our website. I investigated and
found that our ISP had switched
their host server operating systems
from Windows to Unix.
Unix
does not recognize the same special
characters in file names
that Windows does. Specifically, Unix
does not recognize the ampersand
( & ) as a valid filename
character. As a consequence, my
"L&F.pdf" file
in my "L&F" folder was
not part of a valid path on the
server.
I
renamed the file to "LF.pdf"
and the folder to "LF", and
updated my
HTML page references, and everything
was ok.
I
recommend that the file/folder names
that you initially select for your
web content consist of character
combinations that are valid on both
Windows and Unix."
