SITE NEWS:
New Discussion
Forum -- Your Web Site
We've added a new
discussion forum at
FTPplanet.com to focus on
Web sites you've created
and uploaded using FTP.
Post your personal Web
site to this section with
some comments on
how you went about
creating, designing and
uploading it. It can be a
site dedicated to a hobby,
your family, poems,
collectibles, or just a
page you created for fun.
You can also use this
section to post your Web
site address and seek
advice and assistance.
We'll feature a member's
site in each issue of
the FTPplanet.com
Newsletter and that person
will win an official
FTPplanet.com "Third Trip
Around the Sun" t-shirt
(while supplies last!)

ARTICLE: FTP Protocol
Overview
If you've ever
wanted to know a
little bit more
about the
technical
aspect of FTP, our
featured article
will give you a
brief overview
Excerpt: "File
Transfer Protocol
(FTP) requires two
programs, a
server program,
and a client
program. Normally
the server program
offers files to
the client
program, but in
some cases, the
server will
also allow the
client to upload
files."
This week's tip
comes to us
courtesy of
rbaylor, who
encourages
his students to
FTP often. Thanks
for the tip!
"I have my
students (learning
HTML) FTP their
work every 15
minutes
or so (sometimes more
often). This enables
them to quickly view
on
the WWW their web
pages while they are
creating their web
projects.
So they do not have to
wait until they are
completed before
seeing
and fixing their
errors. Also frequent
FTPing gives them a
"backup"
of their work, if (and
they do)lose their
disk, or really mess
it up."

"I really
can't think of any better
free hosting service. There
are absolutely
no
banners, pop-ups, or
advertisements of any kind,
and they give you
200 MB of
space! I know people who
could fit their entire
computer in
that much
space! You do need an FTP
program, but I don't think
that's
a problem
for most... I definitly
suggest trying it out!"
