SITE OF THE WEEK

This week's FTPplanet Site of the Week is from FTPplanet community
member HalleB529, who posted this information about her Web site:

"I created a web site for my grandmother regarding her WWII Navy
WAVES service and a surprise party which we held for her regarding
her 76th birthday and 56th Navy WAVES enlistment in 1999.

I just updated the web site, but I would appreciate your input. There is
a lot of text on the pages, as well as photos, and I have broken them up
into sections for which I know WAVES would search/be interested. Other
WAVES veterans who have contacted me told me the way I have the site
set up works well for them, as they can browse by category, find the
page/pictures for which they are searching in one area. However, I am
concerned about a long loading period per page, and that non WAVES
vewing the pages may see too much text/load time for photos.

Through an informal poll: older WAVES veterans have made it clear they
prefer all the photos and stories regarding a category (ex: Hunter College)
on one single page: they do not want to click onto another link to view more
information/continue the page.

Grandma turns 80 this November, and I really want to do a great job with
the site to celebrate her 60th Navy WAVES enlistment anniversary.

I would appreciate your advice. Please be gentle, lol, but honest-this is
my first web site I have designed.

My husband and I are currently AOL subscribers, so we do not have the
best options available, but I hope to change to a new server/host by this
winter."

Thanks for posting your Web site HalleB529 (and a big happy birthday to
your Grandma from all of us at FTPplanet.com)!

Featured review: Brett, 5 Planets

"Friendly, reliable reponsive hosting service with great prices (especially
for reseller accounts) and great features (including mySQL and php). They
have loads of truly loyal customers. I like them. Only improvements I can
imagine would be some additional php mods, and easier SSL access. But
I'm sure they'll help you install anything reasonable."

 FEATURED TIP: Naming Your Homepage

When creating your Web site, the page that visitors first see when coming to
your site is called your Homepage. This is the page that visitors go to by default
when they type in the main address for your site.

This homepage can be any HTML page you want, but it must be named either
index.html or default.html. For example, when you visit FTPplanet.com
(http://www.FTPplanet.com), you are really going to the index.html page off the
root directory or http://www.FTPplanet.com/index.html.

This is true of all subdirectories as well. For example.
http://www.FTPplanet.com/newsletter/ will actually go to the 'index.html' page in
the 'newsletter' directory.

When you create your personal Web pages, remember to name the page you
want as your Homepage 'index.html'.
