Have you ever wished you could easily rename a file
you are transferring
without changing the name of the original file? In
WS_FTP, this is as
easy as pie.
Highlight the file that you would like to transfer but
instead of
transferring it as you would normally, hold down the
'CTRL' key and then
transfer the file. WS_FTP will prompt you for a
destination filename.
Simply enter the new name and click 'OK' to start the
transfer.

This new feature in the newsletter will focus on how
someone has used
FTP to solve a problem. This week we're focusing on
how a student used
WS_FTP to solve the problem of delivering homework
assignments to
a teacher who would not accept floppy disks.
Problem: Last semester Jerry Loyd had problems doing
his homework.
It was not the workload that troubled him, but how to
submit class
projects to his professor. Loyd, who lives and works
in Boise, Idaho, is
obtaining his master's degree in engineering via
satellite from California
State University at Chico (CSU). While taking a JAVA
course at CSU,
he discovered his professor would not accept floppy
disks or printed
reports as a viable method of course work submission
because she used
a Sun workstation to grade on, which does not read
Windows-formatted
floppy disks. In fact, she tossed his first assignment
and $13 Federal
Express package into the trash, confirming the fact he
needed a quick,
easy-to-use solution.
Solution: Loyd first worked with a co-worker and UNIX
guru who was
able to help him transfer the files. This solution was
short-lived because
once the guru left the work place, Loyd found it too
cumbersome and
complicated to use UNIX commands. At the suggestion of
another co-
worker, Loyd then looked to find an FTP client and
tried many before
finding WS_FTP Pro, which was more intuitive and
comprehensive than
any of the others he had tried. Loyd has used the
product for six months.
Now with WS_FTP Pro and a few clicks of the mouse,
Loyd transfers
his assignments to the UNIX server at CSU for his
professor to review.
Benefits: Working full-time while earning a master's
degree is never easy
for anyone. Luckily, WS_FTP has lessened Loyd's
burden. Using
WS_FTP Loyd doesn't need to learn a whole new
technical language
or spend needless time becoming familiar with new
products. Alternatively,
Loyd has more time for his studies, which earned him
an "A" in the JAVA
course.
According to Jerry Loyd, "There is no way to
communicate the elation I
felt when I saw WS_FTP work for the first time. Simply
stated, it saved
my academic life. It gave me total confidence in my
ability to get massive
file transfers of an entire Web sub-tree transferred,
error-free. I knew
how to use it without reading a manual. Anyone who
knows Windows
Explorer can use this product."
We recently asked "Where do you buy most of your
software?" Of those
that purchase software, most purchase from the
developer's web site (but
most of you said that you simply don't buy software).
