Part I - Monitoring, Pausing and Starting Transfers with WS_FTP Pro
For this tutorial,
we'll be monitoring a transfer from an anonymous FTP connection to ftp.FTPplanet.com.
If you need assistance connecting to an anonymous FTP site, click
here.
Once connected to ftp.FTPplanet.com, navigate to the
desired destination folder on your local system (My
Documents, Desktop, etc.) as you would for a normal
transfer.
Now, open the Transfer Manager dialog by clicking on View
in the toolbar menu and selecting Transfer Manager.
Now we are going to monitor the download of a file to your
computer from ftp.FTPplanet.com. With the Transfer
Manager open in the background, go to WS_FTP Pro
and open (double click) the folder labeled WS_FTP on
ftp.FTPplanet.com (the Remote System) and then open the
folder labeled WS_FTP Pro. Select the file, WS_FTPPro_eval.exe,
and click the download transfer arrow (left arrow).
You will now see your new transfer has appeared in the Transfer
Manager. The Transfer Manager displays the following
information about your transfer:
- Source - The path and name of the file or folder that is being transferred.
- Status - A progress bar showing percentage of completion.
- Transferred - The size of the transfer in bytes.
- Rate (KB/S) - The number of Kilobytes being transferred per second.
- Size - The actual size (in bytes) of the file.
- Time Left - The estimated time left until the transfer is complete.
Now let's pause the transfer before it finishes downloading. To pause a transfer, first highlight the transfer you'd like to pause (in this case, it's the only transfer) and then click on Transfer in the toolbar menu and select Pause.
