Hey everyone!
I have read most of the stuff here and checked most of it and nothing works.

Turning off the firewall completely and turning off firewall monitoring did not help either. Sad to say. This problem happend just now, today, and I haven't installed any updates to my knowledge.

No FTP-connections work no matter what and I do not have any other firewalls except for XP. I am running avast! Antivirus. Turning that off did not help either.

I try the FTP-connection and all I get is a few seconds wait and then
C:\WINDOWS>ftp someftp.org
Connected to someftp.org.
Connection closed by remote host.

The thing is that I am NOT connected at all. The FTP-server hasn't noticed anything.

Appreciate any help I can get.

Regards,
Ted

Thank you for the help.

I followed all suggestions and in the end even though I don't have Norton on my PC, I do have Kasperski Antihacker. While I tried certain tweaks it never ran clean and after turning it off FTP started working.
Also got an extra bonus: "gave me back my "Create PDF from Webpage" option in Adobe Acrobat.

Thank you!

Hey everybody,
I tried all suggestions and still can't start WS_FTP Pro or for that matter DOS window command code FTP.
Hope some additional suggestions are floating around?

BTW, after those changes was the machine rebooted?

Thanks!

Good tip. I'd found that FTP had stopped working and I tried resetting the Windows Firewall to it's default state and switching it off solved the problem. The odd thing about it is that I Windows Firewall was off before anyway as I have Agnitum Outpost.

Thanks to DJ for their solution, and shame on you to anyone who mocked it!! Bit annoyed I didn’t try this myself, but there you go.

Here is the magic formula that worked for me :
Disable WinXP firewall
AND
Disable Internet Connection Sharing

If I don't disable the sharing, it doesn't work. Don't ask me why ! ;-)

Additional note of help:

None of the below worked for me. I tried to adjust the PASV settings, and turning off the firewall, setting firewall exceptions, opening ports manually, etc.

What DID eventually work was, after shutting off the firewall, also turning off firewall monitoring. It was an option in the firewall program only after I turned off the firewall, saying something like, "I have my own firewall and I will monitor it manually". Once I turned off the monitoring, FTP immediately began to work flawlessly.

I had no end of trouble trying to get Ftp to work recently - it was all going splendidly for months and months, then after a reinstall of norton 2004 IS, it all stopped. I tried everything I could think of, I was about to blame NIS cos it all worked when it was disabled. But I did try a reset of Windows firewall, and hey presto , all is ok again, thanks guys you saved me a call to Norton support!

Great stuff

Thanks to all, especially Snook, Akertz & Jon-Morris,

I went through all of the suggestions. Mine was resolved only by going into WS_FTP's Advanced tab, into Sessions and selecting "Use PASV" (which I think is what Akertz & Jon_Morris suggested).

Anyway thanks in a huge way!

That tip about resetting windows firewall worked. I turned it back on with the port 21 exception and now I can connect to FTP. Thanks.

Well, you see, it's like this...from my point of view these problems are slightly different for each PC, as it all depends on the OS, installed software, viruses had/deleted, the configuration of the whatever, well I think you get the point....each PC is unique so, what affects one may not affect all...what works for one and some may not work for some and all....

right! what a blimmin nightmare!tried everything you guys/gals say! turn this off, turn that on, but hey still no luck with getting it to work your way.

The only way i can get it to work is if I turn windows firewall off completely, then do want i wanna do to the ftp folder. once i've updated my website, i turn the firewall back on.

I've been tackling the problem for a long while now, some times you do something it will work other times it won't.

its got a mind of it's bloody own. this is shoddy microsoft for you, too much money, but can't sort a teeny problem out. At least give us an update on something.

anyway, enough of my blagging!

quick solution just turn firewall off completely!

now i've said this it probably won't work for me!

I couldnt figure out what was wrong with my ftp either. I thought it was my ISP. I was able to connect on my dial up backup connection no prob but not on DSL. Well after bugging them for a while they convinced me that they were not filtering anything and the prob was not on their end. Finally I Googled this topic and thank god for that!

Reseting POS windows firewall to default and disabling it yet again fixed the problem. Thank you guys.

I ended up having to turn passive mode on in my ftp server (Bulletproof), then set a passive port number on my router. That seemed to do the trick.

Some great reading on FTP and passive Vs. active stuff can be found here http://slacksite.com/other/ftp.html

If you have all your programs installed before Dl'ing SP2 then everything works just fine, but now that i had to reinstall windows and i installed SP2 before anything else my ftp client don't work, the only way i found that works is turning off microsofts firewall, but when i did that my anti-virus software was stopping trojans left and right...WTF! is up with that, im thinking to switching to linux. G'day,

We lost a heap of time trying to work out why suddenly we couldn't ftp from our machines running xp sp2 while all machines running 98 still worked fine.

The passive transfer solution will likely fix your problem as it did for us. In our version of WS_FTP, we had to go to Session Properties and on the advanced tab, untick the Passive transfers box.

If you lost as much time as we did, send the bill for your time to MicroSoft.

Can anyone tell me how to change the internet settings so that I can get to my remote sites? I know the DNS and password I use are correct. I can FTP from explorer but now with this FTP Pro or Home programs.
