I've been trying all kind of tweaks, but still I can't use FTP.My machine is running: Windows XP SP2 (Windows XP Firewall is disabled) AVG Free antivirus ZoneAlarm Pro firewall I use the FireFTP extension for Mozilla Firefox as my FTP Client I've already checked: -Ports 20 and 21 are open in the router as well as in ZoneAlarm -Firefox has all possible permissions in the ZonaAlarm Program Controls tab -In "Internet Options", the "passive mode" checkbox is unchecked Any other ideas about what should I try next? Thank you. IP: Logged |

FTP in DOS with Windows XP SP2 seems flawed in as much that the firewall wont allow the native DOS FTP to work. Now I know there must be work arounds BUT Bill Gates and his programmers should not allow SP2 with the changes to the firewall to be released with out it being setup so the average person can use it ! WSFTP works in passive mode but wtah the hell is Windows doing stopping the native FTP syetem from working ! Beats me , If only there was a real alternative to Windows IP: Logged |

yep - that was it - Macafee 8 - I wouldn't have thought an anti-virus program would block FTP - I assumed that that kind of task would be handled by an internet security program like Norton or Windows Firewall. Learn something new every day.IP: Logged |

McAfee 8 has a new (i think) task, called "access protection". It prevents ftp communication. Unblock them. Worked on my machine.IP: Logged |

Just wanted to say thanks for this post being on yahoo. I've been having trouble for more than a year with my ftp program, I switch between cuteftp, wsftp, webdrive, and of course regular IE. It seems like one or two files gets copied and then it just stalls. I switched the option about ftp being passive to NO and now it works great!!!! Thanks so much!!!!IP: Logged |

You dont have to go through the registry to fix it.The trick that Sammy came up with works the same if you do the following: >go to "Internet options" >click on the "Advanced" tab >make sure that "Use passive FTP" is NOT clicked Problem solved. Now you can access FTP! IP: Logged |

O.K check this out. I have been having a problem with my FTP to my XP pro machine and some IP's (not domains). It always gave me that dumb error. Well check this out. I started looking within the registry and noticed something quite out of place. Open the registry by going to start => run => type regedit in the run box => when in the registry follow hkey local user => software => microsoft => FTP. Now within the ftp folder you will see a string called "use PASV" dowble click and and it should have a value of "yes" change that value to "no"!!!! and wallah it freeking works. Try it and let me know if it worked for you my email is sammytosam@hotmail.com.Later all Sammy T Fix found on December 22 3:38 EST hahahahahahah

I had this same problem. Like mentioned above, make sure that port 20 and 21 are open for any software or hardware firewalls on the server end. For XP SP2 this is in the Control Panel under 'Windows Firewall'. This next part is what gets people: In Internet Explorer go to Tools | Internet Options | Advanced (tab) and uncheck the 'Use Passive Ftp' box. It is toward the bottom of the 'Browsing' section. Then close all instanced of Internet Explorer for the changes to take effect. Problem solved.IP: Logged |

have you tried going to the "Windows Firewall" (which comes with SP2) and allow your 'ftp program' access...or adding 'port 21' (which is the standard for 'ftp')...the 'Windows Firewall' replaces the 'ICF' and is installed in the active mode.... related threads... http://www.ftpplanet.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/003158.html

Ah, so that might explain why I'm having difficulty accessing my company's FTP site from my home computer. I know we have Windows XP with SP2 installed. Could you explain how to use the ftp.exe command you mentioned? I found that in the system32 folder but then had no clue what to do.Thanks! IP: Logged |

After installing Windows XP SP2, it is no longer possible to access anymous FTP servers from within Internet Explorer. Have tried this on several PCs, and all of them are preventing access after Windows XP SP2 is installed - I get the following error: An error occured opening that folder on the FTP Server. Make sure you have permission to access that folder. Note: I am still able to connect to the FTP servers with the FTP.exe command available in the \Windows\System32 folder.IP: Logged |
