Thanks for your help. It turns out the system had been set to Selective Startup. When I restarted in Normal mode, FTP Pro worked just fine.

am I right in assuming that 'winsock' is a 'Windows' thing not an WS_FTP Pro issue.... if you have that corrected then maybe a reinstall of WS_FTP Pro may be inorder....

I've been using WS FTP Pro without difficulty since December, both at home and at work to update my site. I had a computer problem at home, the winsock was reset, and since then I cannot connect from home, but there is no problem connecting from work. The settings are the same. Connection fails, although I am connected to the internet (broadband, always on). Part of the error says:
Error reading response from server.

Connection closed by remote host.

Host type (1): Automatic Detect
I could use some help!
