Thanks for the help. I ran into this today Using WS_FTP LE 5.06 on a new X60 ThinkPad with Symantec Client Firewall. FTP had been working for two weeks, so I don't know why it failed today. I got no help from Symantec, but Lenovo/IBM suggested checking local PC user groups. So I Googled on "Unused Windows Services" and found this entry. The details of how to Permit the access differed, but by Permiting the access, FTP worked AND the Gateway Service program was added with permit Automatic as indicated. However, when I set the Unused... rule back to block, FTP failed again. So, I set it to Monitor (which warns me, but ignores the rule). I can live with that. Thank you for your suggestions. Can't get any FTP to work (WSFTP, Fire(fox)FTP, IE)...I am running Win XP SP2, and I also run ClamWin and AVG. I have shut down AVG, I have shut down ClamWin, I have turned off MS Firewall. Nothing works. I have allowed WSFTP, IE, and alg.exe in MS Firewall. I have allowed Port 21 (which the FTP site I am trying to access uses). I get slightly different error messages when Windows Firewall is on vs. off. However, both ways, no connection. I have tried both active and passive FTP. Nothing. The error takes a long time, and it says that the REMOTE host is the one that disconnects, not my computer. I know that the login, password, and FTP addy are correct, because I can connect on other computers. I've got no router, just Millenium Digital Media's cable modem (By the way, MDM may actually be the WORST COMPANY in the country... no kidding.) Any further ideas? This blows. IP: Logged |

I found something interesting that worked for me. I tried all the suggestions mentioned and none worked (I have NAV 2006 installed).By chance, I opened the windows security center and found that the windows firewall was funcioning ALONGSIDE NAV's firewall... I just deactivated the windows firewall (keeping NAV's working) and no problem!

So, I am happily minding my own buisness, when out of the blue my favorite upload method stops working.....I literally went over everything I could think of, to no avail....as a last resort I uninstalled and reinstalled Norton Internet Security 2006, two and a half hours later, I am a happy camper....IP: Logged |

I've been having a problem accessing my FTP recently also. I know it has nothing to do with NAV cause I've had it for a long time and used FTP while I had it(by the way I have NAV2004), but my sister got on my computer recently who knows nothing about computers and must have messed with a setting or something. I tried and couldn't figure out what it was. I can't upload or download things to or from my server, if I use another computer though I can still upload and download to my server so I know it has to be my computer. I don't use any FTP program to upload and download to the server I just upload by connecting directly to my server using folders. This is the error message I get: ------------------------------ An error occured copying a file to the FTP server. Make sure you have permission to put files on the server. Details: The connection on the server was reset ------------------------------ IP: Logged |

A big thank you to Pannebaker for the advice on how to get WSFTP working again after it suddenly refused to connect. There had been no problems with NAV2005It took me some time to realise what the problem was -I had recently upgraded to NAV2006 from NAV2005 and Norton Antivirus 2006 Internet Worm Protection was the culprit. After following Pannebaker's instructions WSFTP is now working fine. IP: Logged |

if like me you had ftp before Norton 2006, and still it didn't work after doing the all the previous things, here's what I did:1. add alg.exe to your rules as explained previously 2. add :21 to your ftp client address in dreamweaver or whatever you use. i.e ftp.zen.co.uk:21 You should be ok then IP: Logged |

Hi, - I can't FTP any more, but FTP on Total Commander works, was install and used before SP and Internet Security software was installed. - I have turn off Windows Firewall, including the service, and all other types of firewalls. - I try to connect to my FTP server on localhost with WS_FTP, failed, Opera failed, Filezilla failed. I can't connect to any FTP servers. - I tried to delete C:\WINDOWS\system32\GroupPolicy and C:\WINDOWS\security and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows Firewall Still not working. I know hot to get it work, but i last only for some seconds. If I reboot the computer, and start the FTp client before all Services and drivers er loaded, it works fine, but when booting process are finnish the FTP client stop working. - How can I find witch process is blocking my FTP. - How can I get my FTP working again?

My problem is a little different but it is with NAV2006 IWP. I have a small LAN and have this app running on all machines including my server. Now my clients can no longer access the server unless IWP is disabled. I've tried disabling all of the Trojan Rules with IWP enable. But, no luck. How can I enable IWP and allow my clients access to the server. I've tried setting rules with IP addresses but no luck. Even Symantec is having trouble with this one.IP: Logged |

A huge THANK YOU to Pannebaker!!!!! (And credit to Kukke also, for the simplified version, but I really appreciated the longer original, for full understanding of the issue.) This was a big frustration with me also. You saved me from the AGONY of communicating with Symantec's Tech Support!!!

Can I just thank my mate Tim for finding this for me after I panicked about the disabling of my FTP after installing Norton 2006?! Yes, this fix (the alg.exe program setting) works with that as well.

Pannebaker, although your solution at first didn't quite work, it brought me to a solution that worked for me. As I am very happy now, I thought I'd share my solution with you:Go to Norton Antivirus 2005 - Click "Options" -- Click "Internet Worm Protection" --- Click "Program Control" ---- Add a new program, and search for the program "alg.exe". It can be found in the folder c:\windows\system32\ You now have added the entry "Microsoft Application Layer Gateway Service". It should be configured as "Automatic". This is what fixed the problem for me. Regards, Dirk
