Compression Mode
WS_FTP Professional 2006 introduces compression mode to your FTP experience.
With compression mode, you can have WS_FTP Professional automatically convert
uploaded files to .ZIP format before transferring. The compressed file will
decrease transfer times, since the compressed file will typically be of a
smaller file size.
WS_FTP provides a choice of compression levels,
preserves directory structure and allows you to password protect the .ZIP
compressed files.

Compressed vs. Uncompressed File Sizes
To demonstrate WS_FTP Professional's Compression
Mode, FTPplanet ran some informal tests and discovered that compression mode can
decrease file size by almost 90%!
FTPplanet compressed two file types ten times -- BMP
graphics and PostScript files. In each case, the system environment (a virtual
machine) was the same: Windows XP SP2 with 512MB virtual memory, WS_FTP Server
5.04 and WS_FTP Professional 2006.
The results were significant, with the BMP graphics
compressing from an average of 11.11 MB to just 1.57 MB. The PostScript files
compressed from an average of 15.99 MB to 9.36 MB (click to enlarge):
